I've never used a tablet, but I've done some sketching with pencil and paper. Furthermore, I've never really had any serious tuition at all, which makes me probably not a very good teacher. The meagre advice I can offer you:

  • Take your time. Draw slowly and carefully, and keep redoing it until you're completely happy with it.
  • I can't stress this enough: have a very clear mental image of what you're going to draw before you start drawing. This makes a huge difference.
  • The internet is full of specialised guides on drawing; make use of them. Especially with drawing living beings, proportion can be difficult to get right, and the guides can be especially useful for that sort of thing.

If you want some advice from people who actually know what they're talking about, try somewhere like ttp://tohno-chan.com/cr/res/412.html.
