And for your crimes against the Japanese language, you should feel bad. Are you a necrophiliac, or is your beloved an inaqnimate object? If not, ある should be replaced by いる. Also, たくさん is only used with discretely quantifiable things. I am not aware of any such scale for infatuation. Lastly, if your first line was meant to form a complete sentence, it's missing a だ after 大好き.

In all honesty, I think the Wapanese crowd is cool. At least, some of 'em. Not the Kawaii Morning type, but Japanese learners like in this thread and people who are truly fascinated by Japan. However, that's all nonsense. I wish anonymous texboards would take off here as well. Imagine if 4-ch got as much traffic as 2ch. That'd be great. I don't understand why textboards and even internet anonymity aren't popular in the US. Maybe Americans are too individualistic?

Yeah, that's what I mean. The framework is all there. Hell, the websites are already there. I have no problem with ordinary people coming to 4-ch as long as they don't act like idiots. It happens already on the Personal boards.
My only reservation would be if 4-ch turned into 4chan, and the signal-to-noise ratio decreased as it became too "normal" and mainstream. Part of 4-ch's charm at the moment is that it's slow, but the posts are generally entertaining.

I feel the same. I like the regular fans of anime and manga and video games, and those interested in Asian or Japanese culture. And to be perfectly frank, such people are smarter than the average American. Or at least that is my experience.
One of the reasons you-know-what-imageboard went to crap is because of the difference in the mind set of Amercian 'net users and Japanese 'net users.
As you probably know the Japanese have a very very strong group, or herd, mindset. And for reasons unknown to me they also already have the idea of keeping separate their cyber-space life from their meat-space life. This is part of why Facebook -a site all about the individual/yourself and where you are forced to use your real legal name- is not cracking the Japanese market and why Twitter -a site about the trending topics/mass discussion and where you can make up any identity you want- is pretty popular.
When a Japanese person sees an Internet community of some sort, they think "How can I become a part of this? How can I add to this?" Which of course forms a better community no matter what!
But, when an American, or a westerner in general, sees some sort of Internet community they think "How can I make this about me? What can I take from this?" Sub-consciously or otherwise. In my honest opinon that the majority of my generations minds have been tainted with narcissism.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/mar/17/facebook-dark-side-study-aggressive-narcissism?INTCMP=SRCH
Of course here I am posting this with a tripcode. Guess I'm one of them. Even if the vast majority of the time I post anonymously. But then what makes me want to use a tripcode that 1% of the time I'm not posting anonymously?

I understand your worry. Even if that happens, there will always be small citadels of quality posting and entertainment. I wonder if 2ch faces the same problem. But there's a definite upside to increased traffic.

>>50
I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I've always had a little disdain for Facebook, and reading that article justifies my feelings even more.

I'm afraid that sites like this will die out, but maybe there will be a golden age of western text boards soon.

> Even if the vast majority of the time I post anonymously. But then what makes me want to use a tripcode that 1% of the time I'm not posting anonymously?

I never thought that trip users might use tripcodes sparingly. Huh.

>>52
He's okay. I don't know this for a fact, but I think there are only two trips posting on 4-ch right now.

54 Name: grey!C.MxxuCiTo : 1993-09-6792 04:41

>>53
By problem do you mean the increased traffic or retarded users?
Now I don't/can't read Japanese so I cannot say for *sure* but I do not think that 2ch faces the same problem. Or at least not nearly as much so. It comes back to the "How can I become a part of this? How can I add to this?" thing in place of "How can I make this about me? What can I take from this?".
2ch is *huge.* And because of that Japanese herd mindset new users see what's already there try to conform to it and become apart of the greater whole. Which is sadly, the inverse of what happens in most of the western Internet.

However, I know they did have a similar problem to us in years past with corporations attempting to monetize their AA characters and memes with t-shirts, plusies, stickers, toys, and lots of other stuff. I also know that 2ch started a campaign against it. I think they called it the "Save Our Monar" campaign. What I don't know is what level of success they had. But if it was anything like their past escapades then I'll guess it was favorable.

You make some good points, and I agree with the gist of what you're saying. I, too, wish for an internet where people focus on the community rather than the individual. That's why I love places like DQN.

However, I think your idealization of the Japanese internet isn't quite true. (Keep in mind that the following is based on personal experience, not concrete data.) I've found the average Japanese internet user to be as guilty of individualism as their western counterparts. Japanese know of 2-ch, but most people I meet use it rarely, favoring more personal sites. Mixi, twitter and personal blogs are very popular, and Facebook is rapidly gaining ground as well.

And then I've found that even 2-ch itself is not really the magical heaven of quality that we sometimes to make it out to be. They have plenty of stupid posters, elitists and spammers, just like the western internet.

In short, I think the concept behind 2-ch is noble and wonderful, but nothing is perfect in practice. Wherever you go, you will have to do some sifting to get the quality. The most we can do is keep trying to make entertaining posts, and hope other users follow suit.

56 Name: ( ˃ ヮ˂) : 1993-09-6792 09:59

I think it had some success but it's an uphill battle. I still saw a ton of 2-ch character paraphernalia wherever I went in big cities in Japan, and I doubt they asked permission or donate the money to 2-ch's servers.

If you have a means of heading to their home, I would recommend giving them immediate company. Otherwise you might successfully imbue them with the perspective of how insignificant their problems might be compared to worldly issues at hand. If they are feeling particularly isolated and alone, reassure them that you care for them and would be devastated to see them go - for example: If they say "nobody cares about me", the proper response is "I care about you". Sometimes, if you have experienced their sort of trauma, you can empathise with them and thus create a feeling of shared misfortune. This serves to lighten their burden significantly.

I know a lot of very depressed people.

I believe that understanding of the insignificance of everything and the nothingness of death are two major milestones in personal philosophy. Don't let religious nonsense about afterlife, reincarnation, etc get you there.

The first one reveals how ridiculous are people, lets you poke fun at them and improves the mood in general. The latter one gives you an ability to judge whenever the life sucks big enough to be done with it.

I think that I experienced a panic attack in class today. We watched a video about crystal meth when it happened. For some reason, I've always just felt funny when the topic of drugs comes up. Anyway, what happened was they were showing some houses of meth addicts, interviews with their kids, that kind of thing. I start feeling weird. A bit dizzy, a bit sick to my stomach. I start to sweat and feel hot. My pulse begins to slow down, and I get dizzy. My vision fades out to white and I wonder if I'm dying. My world feels like it's came to a stop, and I just get hotter and hotter as I worry that people are staring at me. (My head is down on my desk at this point.) I'm not sure how long the whole experience lasted, but it couldn't have been more than five minutes, and it was very, very, awful.

For all that I disliked the Harry Potter fandom as a teenager, I'm glad the actual stories (and a good deal of fan-fiction for that matter) were genuinely entertaining works of literature. Growing up, it's distressing to see kids these days with their Twilights, Hunger Games, Homestucks and whatnot, who might never know the meaning of good fiction.

Also, what other fandom has created something as amazing as AVPM? That's right; none.
