Personally I find Putin fascinating. I actually have a collection of Putin pics.

He's a very shrewd, careful individual, which makes him extremely hard to read. He defiantly wants to consolidate and keep control of power, but at the same time he will mostly let people do as they please(although he has restricted this given recent events).

Whether he actually gives a shit about Russia is also very confusing to try to puzzle out. He's perfectly fine with not even being able to drink his own tap water, and he freely admits things are not idealistic in the country while doing nothing to change that, but he also went to great lengths to secure Russias interests in Ukraine and present and good image at Sochi.

For a long time he has been fostering a nationalistic stance in Russia, but strangely it is not very militaristic. That could change soon, but for the past, oh, 15 years or so he's mostly used it as a way to suppress and placate his own population, as oppose to raise them up and excite them in preparation for expansion as it typical.

I think this is also evident in the way he has handled Ukraine. The fact that he has and continues to twist things in the area towards Russias favor with less than 100 people dead is, frankly, miraculous. I don't believe he's out to make a statement or wants to be the next Stalin. Keep in mind he was KGB; he works in the shadows. I think he seriously saw the EU agreement as a threat to Russia's interest, particularly the gas pipeline, and has taken steps to preserve things the way they were for the past 20 years.

I hope this isn't too rambley and maybe helps you decide for yourself.

I agree, it seems to be more frequent as of late.

As is the use of the words 'basically' and 'essentially' as filler. People say them now instead of 'umm' or 'ah', but all they really signify is 'I am thinking of what to say next'.

285 Name: >>277 : 1993-09-7541 12:11

>>280
I agree with your description of Putin himself.

However, tap water is generally okay to drink, but without filtering you will see limescale eventually build up in your kettle. If you are referring to a rust water in Sochi, it's an evidence of a hastily built piping. There is always some rust after repairs, but leave water pouring for a few minutes and it will clear up. AFAIK, the story about tap water was blown out of proportions in press.

The stance that he has been fostering can be any, but not "nationalistic". "Internationalistic", like Soviets did it, is more like it. He plays patriotism card a lot, but any mention of nationalism is instantly connected to Nazi Germany and WWII as evidenced by how right-wing Ukrainian parties are described in media. Baltic countries got similar treatment too. Right-wing parties and organisations are mostly banned in Russia. Politicians keep saying that the country is multinational and multicultural (in hopes that this make national crisis disappear?). There are even plans to change immigration laws that would legalize hundreds of thousands or even millions of illegal migrants (which mostly come from southern ex-USSR countries) but common people have no say in this.

There is one tell tale sign that what he does is not nationalistic is that he, other politicians and media avoid one word: "русский". They use "россиянин" which was coined by Yeltsin. The former means a very certain major ethnic group in Russia, the latter means a resident of any ethnicity.

For 15 years he was suppressing his people just to isolate the political system from them. FSB was reformed to fight opposition mostly. Media agencies are owned by people close to the government. Bureaucracy is two times larger than USSR despite twice as less population and computerization.

As for Ukraine, Crimea is important because NATO bases there would practically lock down Russian access to the Black Sea. But annexation gave interim government a solid argument: "They took our land!" thus making it important to either take over Eastern Ukraine (= Russian-speaking) or at least assure that it gets broader autonomy. But yes, don't trust Putin when he says anything about helping brother nation.

He is not the next Stalin, but he is the next Brezhnev (high oil prices, even longer time as the head of state - 4+4(+4)+6+6 = 24 vs 18, economy on the brink of stagnation, but without 5 hero of whatever stars). It's bad that Russian economy depends on oil and gas prices so much (see Era of Stagnation). However, Russia and India plan to build a new pipeline through China. Do you remember a certain association named BRICS? Russia sells a lot of military equipment to India, and China is building its aircraft carrying fleet which is fairly useless for takeover of Siberia but essential for domination in the Pacific Ocean.
