And I think we're saying essentially the same thing at the end - that he/his team assumed that good roles would just come in on their own, particularly as you pointed out after any awards nominations. But as others' later posts have pointed out, he wasn't really high up at all in the feeding chain, and the competition is fierce. (Plus I suspect any actor would be better off having too many irons in the fire because of the number of projects that turn into vaporware!)
