SICP is too hard for freshmen and doesn't offer that much for experienced programmers, you're better off just outright learning a LISP yourself. It was a very complete book, though.
But to be honest, I never really did need a "programming" book. Really, the two books I HAD to buy for my major because they were so useful was Cormen's Intro to Algorithms and the Silberschatz dino book cause I like dinos with PDAs. The rest I photocopied or downloaded.
