Hey, so it's that one DQN from earlier this month who decided to get good at drawing. Just checking in as it's been around 150 days since then. How much progress have I made?

Well, I admit I haven't been doing it as much as I had decided to. Right now I'm on 59/10000. That's only thirty more than that first post, an average of roughly one drawing every five days. At that rate I will die of old age long before I reach 10000! So yes, I am disappointed in myself for letting other things get in my way. However, I have not given up! I refuse to give up just because I've dropped the ball. That's not who I want to be. I also note that some of that time has been fruitfully spent toward other skills, so as far as the objective of avoiding wasting so much time on the interwebs goes, I've still found some success.

In these last thirty drawings I've primarily been working on gestures and getting the hang of basic human structure. 3D models have been really helpful, as have sets of gestures from artists I admire (for example, I think Sakino Shingetsu does really great dynamic poses). It's slow work and I'll be at it for a long time, but it's important. I don't want to spend 3 hours finishing the shading on the upper lip if it's not even in the right place, or if the arm is bent at some distracting angle.

Recently I've gone on a bit of a binge stockpiling pictures of airplanes. I'll migrate over to those for working on geometrical, non-organic shapes and fundamental control. I mean, if I'm going to draw loli catgirls flying F-14s, I'll need to be able to draw an F-14, right?

I've been playing it on and off since alpha, and I agree with you on most points. I always thought the procedural generation was the heart of the game, but sadly that direction seems to have been abandoned in favour of quite generic RPG-ish features.

The current terrain generation isn't terrible, but it could be much, much better. Rather than biomes being just discrete blobs, I'd love to see it use something closer to the Dwarf Fortress terrain generation, where it just keeps track of things like temperature, elevation, rainfall and drainage, and deduces from that what terrain, plants and animals should spawn there, with biomes emerging naturally rather than being arbitrarily imposed from the top down. Admittedly, DF's terrain generation isn't perfect either, and can still have quite sharp boundaries between biomes.

What I'm possibly most disappointed by is how boring the underground still is. Since alpha, basically the only improvements are a few new stone/ore types, and one or two new generated structures (e.g. abandoned mineshafts, strongholds). And no matter how varied the surface is, dig five metres down and everywhere is the same. Again, it's not that the generation is terrible, it's just that it could so easily be so much better.

Here's a few ideas: underground rivers and lakes that you can explore on boats; ore concentrations actually varying in space, e.g. more coal near the surface in swamps, or more diamonds deep under mountains; DF-style fungal caverns with giant mushrooms (which are already in the game anyway!); caverns made of snow and ice under snowy biomes; actual geological features, e.g. strata, rather than just blobs of stone/dirt; an option to have chunks tile vertically as well as horizontally, so you can have infinite depth worlds where you can dig down forever.

As for it becoming soulless, I can see what you mean, but I think that's a little harsh. It's still the same game at heart, and it still has the same childlike playing-with-blocks joy to it, if you give it a chance. Even the new features, though not the direction I would've liked, can sometimes be interesting and - dare I say it - fun.

Also, just to mention, if you do want to play the early releases again, in the Minecraft launcher you can go into the profile settings and set it to something earlier. It has every previous version and they all work fine.

The game has lost a lot of the tightness that made it popular and fun in the name of adding more horizontal content, there are now a lot more biomes, but they're all boring, there are a lot more mobs, but they don't interact in any special way and stick out from the old tight ecosystem, there are a lot more recipies, but they are only one or two steps deep at most and don't really add any new things you can do to the game in them, there's a bunch of new combat flare, but the basic loop of combat is unchanged. None of these on their own are too egregious but they still point towards the direction the game is taking being a much wider but shallower one. The terrain generator in particular is a major thorn in the side now, it used to make interesting outcroppings that were bugs sure but added a lot of flare and landmarks of interest and the lack of biomes let things like beaches spawn next to valleys and other features that weren't all just specific to what biome you were in.
I think I'll go back and play better than wolves for a while, it's really the way I think minecraft should have gone with it's development, I just hope someone makes a total conversion mod sometime to retrofit the systems back to one of the mid beta versions but with modern mod compatibility.
