Thread to talk about the actor Tom Hiddleston.

>>399 He was excellent in Corionalus. Excellent I tell you. Haterz be hating saying he wasn't. ;)

>>400 I posted some Marvel rumors many moons ago. They said TH would have parts in both movies. Since everyone and the kitchen sink are going to be in them I think TH will have a place.

Thinking about it, it is probably the Mail trying to avoid writing the word "anus".

He must be in IW - surely.....or are we back to the dark days of 2013 and The Year of No Projects? The alternatives:

(1) James Ivory's ongoing fantasy casting of Richard II (the fan fiction version)
(2) Will TH be in the new Same Mendes production at the Royal Court (casting still not announced).

My guess is neither. My other guess is that TH might be filming for Infinity Wars but how big a part it ends up being could depend on how Thor 3 does with preview audiences. In other words: he might be filming scenes, but not have been announced just in case Marvel bins him. Marvel seems to have a difficult relationship with Loki. He is a hugely popular character but they had to be told to put more of him into Thor 2 (and imagine how bad that movie would have been with even less Loki).

Sam Mendes. No slur on his direction intended....!

404 Name: Couch Potato : 2016-12-21 18:33 ID:Heaven

>>401,402 Admittedly the list has Avengers characters plus Brolin for Thanos. So either Thanos is the only villain for both films - the article says the filming will occur over the whole 2017 because both parts will be filmed together - or other villains are being kept a secret, at least for now since Marvel isn't really one for secrets.

I do agree that Loki is more likely to appear than not, but Thor 3 will be largely about Thor and Hulk, I doubt Marvel is waiting on Thor 3 to decide about Loki.

I maintain that filming for Infinity Wars isn't what is keeping TH from new jobs, many of the actors in that list will also be busy with IW but they have already announced future works.

So I don't know, maybe Hollywood is waiting for Skull before investing money on TS's latest bf. Maybe he's writing his debut script as director "I know what I did last summer"

>>404 I think it's a matter of Marvel pretending to not want to reveal Thor 3 spoilers - even though Loki is part of the Infinity Wars, according to comic book fans.

This is worth a chuckle:

cook with TS" invites because she said that she knows that cliques promote exclusivity. I think that TS has a few secrets of her own, and she therefore leads a very tightly media-managed lifestyle to protect those secrets and her branding as the girl next door that all girls want to be, and to continually redefine her image. Most of her hangouts are business-related,the allegedly feminist VS squad appearances started to make her look less boy crazy after her PR breakups, appearing with Zayn and Gigi was for the Fifty Shades sequel song, going to the Hilfiger fashion show was to plug him on her snapchat and for him to use "This is is What You Came For" in the show, appearing with T Hall from Kinky Boots makes her look edgy and minority-group friendly, etc.

Tom doesn't seem to be on the presenters' list for the GG awards on Sunday, for better or worse. Priyanka Chopra, Sienna Miller, Brie Larson, and Thor/Chris Hemsworth made the cut. Hmm...Lighting a candle that Tom stays off the red carpet, keeps the beard, looks handsome, is work-focused, and stays drama free : ) Tom's work ethic and his resume is enough to propel his career. There's some in Hollywood for a thespian/leading man. Fassbender films havne't done well, nor have Hemsworth's solo efforts sold. Only Dicaprio and Denzel can sell any film, no matter what.

>>436>>435>>438 That's a hard jacket for anyone to pull off. Not sure I get the look. But British men seem to style all of their clothes esp. on the slim slide, like the Beatles' suits. Even Tom's Ralph Lauren quilted jacket fits a little small, IMO,such that the sleeves are a bit too short on the wrists since he's so tall. Maybe they're trying to show off his frame and muscles with slim fitting clothes, and the next size up would gape? I'm guessing...blah. I love his navy jackets myself, but to the camera, they can appear a bit worn.

>>441 I know what you mean. I don't like that look and at times I fear for Tom's fertility because his trousers are so tight.

The reason his jackets are so short is because he is actually disproportionately long in the body, meaning that his torso is longer than his legs. Most men's clothes are cut on the basis that the legs and torso are about half and half (for women the assumption is that the legs are longer than the torso). He dresses well to hide it and he has skinny legs which make them look longer than they are. But look at this, for example, which shows that his torso is longer:

>>442 Is Gucci a golden nugget? I feel it would be great for a man who is into fashion and would enjoy selecting things from the collection. I hate Jared Leto but he is a good example of a star who clearly puts a lot of thought into how he dresses.

But on someone like Tom they look terrible because he has no idea how to work the directional designer freebies into his everyday wardrobe. He was much better buying things from Reiss - he understood what he was buying (a v neck t shirt, which is about at most men's limit of fashion understanding) and seemed to know how it worked with his other clothes.

Generally I think it is a travesty that TH gets on a lot,of best dressed lists. I don't think being well dressed is synonymous with looking amazing in a suit someone else has chosen and tailored for you.

445 Name: Anon. : 2017-01-06 23:17 ID:CdfXpVes

>>457>>455>>456 Hmmm...I see your point. But at least he dedicated the award to the doctors, and nurses, and people out in the trenches doing self-less humanitarian work every day, instead of just referencing himself. Its easy to castigate Tom, or Megan Markle, or Angelina Jolie for having saviour complexes, flitting into and out of war torn areas like diamond winged butterflies. But at the end of the day, they've done more for charity than I have this year. I feel like I have to do much more good work in the world before I can adjudicate entertainers' charitable actions, even when they reference their service in career-oriented, self-serving moments.

>>465>>466 The man in the pic has been IDed as a Unicef worker on tumblr, and it was assumed that the girl works for Unicef. I'm assuming that from now on, that even when Tom makes a "grumpy cat face" when he's photographed by the paps walking in his neighborhood or at G&W, that his PR called them there. I think that munching eggs, while wearing the same outfit over and over again, is the least interesting way of doing something interesting.
>>463 How does Swift control the golden globe awards? Is this through Universal? I love a conspiracy theory : )I think that Tom acted very well in TNM, and I haven't seen TPVOJS. But I thought TNM would win b/c the GG awards like media friendly, well-known good looking actors, or exciting new actors and glossy shows w heat. Matt Bomer from White Collar has a GG, DiCaprio had many GG awards long before he won an Oscar, Jonathan Reese-Meyers, J Franco, D Barrymore, now Emma Stone...glossy fresh-faced famous people. And the GGs also love UK shows. And though the acting was vg, the TNM was very cinematic (beautiful clothes, gorgeous locations, cool action sequences) and was easy to engage emotionally in. Not saying this is fair! Not saying that this was necessarily right!

471 Name: NewAnon : 2017-01-09 09:18 ID:CE/5pgoT

>>470 Tom was up against actors who gave way better performances than his in TNM. Courtney B. Vance obviously but there was also Riz Ahmed for The Night Of and honestly, Riz's Naz was absolutely amazing when compared to Tom's Jonathan Pine. Compared to People vs OJ and The Night Of, TNM seems like a very outdated show that was saved mostly by Olivia Coleman and Hugh Laurie. Tom's acting alone wasn't that strong. And I say that as someone who does think Tom is a good actor. His TNM performance simply wasn't that great when compared to his peers in the same category. That's why most are side eyeing Tom's win. And his bungled cringe speech (intentional or not) didn't help matters either. Especially not after summer of 2016 antics.

He faux dates TS, twirls Priyanka (who has the same manager fyi) for press at the Emmys, then he wonders around London, eating all alone wearing a sad grey hoodie under a peacoat?! It's odd. I'm so confused. The man is a mystery. I think the brunette stroking his hair backstage is his stylist Ilaria Urbanati. She appears to be married, and maybe has a kid.

>>471 This. I have loved Tom's work over the years but TNM was really not his best work. When we watched it together when it was first on I think we all thought it was quite good, if our comments on the board are anything to go by. But I started to watch the series again a few months ago after watching OJ and by comparison it was really - not that great. Very expensively shot, great locations, lots of explosions and TH shirtless in every episode, and wonderful supporting performances. But he was more wooden than I remember and the script was clunky (which I did see the first time).

>>476 That's not the stylist. If you look at recent pictures of her in her insta feed she has for reasons best known to herself dyed her hair a brassy blonde.

The Dailymail just threw Tom Hiddleston under the proverbial bus for his speech, specifically in the name of Taylor Swift. Ouch...Wow. This is sad, and dark.

'No wonder Taylor Swift ended things!' Tom Hiddleston ridiculed on social media for making thank you speech about South Sudan a plug for his Night Manager miniseries

>>471 Riz Ahmed was following in Ben Whishaw's footsteps, because Whishaw originated the part for the BBC miniseries Criminal Justice, and Ben received tons of praise for his performance, including the International Emmy award in 2005. HBO remade the series. I think re-makes never get enough credit, b/c I heard Ahmed was great. Didn't think Tom was wooden as Pine. He was trying to slowly let different colors and layers of emotions bubble under the surface, and that's really hard to accomplish. Esp. for Tom who seems so natural on stage. J Chastain is good at that, and Cate Blanchett is great at it. Thought Laurie was deliciously intense, but was a snarling villain archetype. Coleman was my fave, hands down, esp with her monologue explaining why she was tracking Roper. But unlike Tom, she got to traverse more emotional terrain and also explode with rage, and the Pine spy role was mostly under the surface. Again, haven't seen TPVOJS.

"An audible gasp could be heard from the crowd as he continued on about South Sudan." Cringing is right. That's what you get for winging it while feeling overconfident.

>>481 Maybe that's it, overconfidence. The man is almost 36, he prides himself on his intelligence, it's beyond belief that he could get it wrong.

He could have said anything from "this award is for the brave people of Unicef that work in the field and has to face the consequence of arms trafficking" to "as a Unicef ambassador I confirmed with my own eyes how much arm trafficking is a huge obstacle to help people in countries like South Sudan, this award is for them".

>>481 I totally agree about the winging it part.

I think people assume that a person who does one form of public speaking (actor, politician etc) will also be good at another (educational seminar, after dinner speech). I have attended a lot of barristers' weddings over the years and have learned that making a good after dinner speech is a quite separate art form from any other kind of public speaking. A lot of the speeches I have heard were absolutely dire (and these were from mostly well educated people whose day job is to react spontaneously and correctly to rapidly changing situations in court).

So I am not surprised that TH did badly. I see a combination of alcohol, excitement at being honoured and a misconception that winging it will be ok, because he's an actor, right? Wrong. The best speeches I have heard are 100% scripted down to every joke and then recited as though they were spontaneous.

While his words were minced, I think the story was premeditated and carefully selected as a clever anecdote of the whimsical reach of the series combined with a major UNICEF plug.
He failed to recognise that this flimsy whimsy would catapult him into a self- congratulatory puddle of racial privilege, overshadowing any good intentions. After the swamplands of Tayto, all puddles should be avoided.

Obviously he will learn from this experience and make a colossal dick of himself when he wins an Oscar.

>>484 I am sure you are right.

What I meant was that there is (possibly) a way of telling this anecdote in which Tom doesn't sound like a plonker, but it needed to be very carefully scripted - which I think we all agree, didn't happen!!

>>484,485 You'd think that after the summer he had he would have been more cautious at an event like this and scripted even the way he orders breakfast.

What a way to start his 2017.

>>480 I never said Tom was wooden as Pine. His performance just wasn't that great if you had also seen The Night Of or People vs OJ. You haven't watched either and only are going by TNM. I've watched both Ben Wishaw in the original version of The Night Of and Riz's performance as Naz is completely different than Ben Wishaw's. Riz's character was a Pakistani Muslim American and having a Muslim as a main character in our current political climate, played the way Riz played him, that is something different. It's not like Riz copied Ben, simply because the show was an American remake. That's like saying since TNM was a TV movie about a spy, it was a budget Bond and Tom was taking his cues from Bond. Or that since ther actors have portrayed Shakespearean characters, Tom takes his cues from them as Henry V or Coriolanus.
Just because you're a "Tom can never do wrong" kind of fan, don't do other actors and their hard work a disservice just to make Tom seem he deserves this Golden Globe. He deserved the nomination but definitely not the award itself. His acting in TNM was good but if you'd seen Riz or Courtney (which you haven't so I honestly don't see how you can even begin to draw comparisons), Tom's Pine was not award worthy. This is regardless of Tom's disastrous summer showmance.

>>484>>487 In my opinion, that just goes to show his general mindset. He doesn't seem to see his own privilege and that's probably why he gets irritated whenever classism is brought up in regards to his upbringing. He still doesn't really see how some things he does or how he perceives some things, give away his lucky privilege and how off putting and off color that sounds to people who are not from that particular circle. Or just how wrong that way of thinking is regardless of how well-intentioned you can be.

490 Name: NewAnon : 2017-01-09 14:30 ID:CE/5pgoT

>>488 By "regardless of his summer showmance", I mean that EVEN if he hadn't had such a crash and burn summer of his public image, his Pine would still not award worthy when compared to his competition. If anything, his cheap summer tactic worked when it comes to people like HFPA and got him the award despite better contenders.

I thought he was very good in TNM and I liked it enough the first time to watch it again - here and there - when it re-aired in the US. It's just that TPvOJ was so pitch perfect in all respects: script, acting, directing, etc. I think TNM is quality tv, just not of the quality OJ achieved.

I'm still gobsmacked by his victory. I just thought Vance would have all the awards pre-shipped to him.

There are the headlines I'm see most in his twitter feed:

  • Hiddleston is slammed for self-serving speech (alliteration there!)
  • Hiddleston criticized for 'white savior' speech
  • Hiddleston mocked for out-of-touch speech
  • People are roasting TH for his truly awkward speech

In the words of Anon, this is 'no bueno.'

Interesting:

http://www.tmz.com/2017/01/09/tom-hiddleston-golden-globes-speech

The interesting part is this line: 'Tom's handlers didn't want him giving our guy an answer ... but Tom took charge.' I never know if it's a good idea for Tom to 'take charge' anymore.

I will try to watch it, but the mind and body aren't really willing.

Also, if the handlers didn't want him talking, you'd think they already knew about the storm. Team Tom is probably popping a few Alka-Seltzer this morning. They should send up some prayers to the PR gods as well.

Captcha: slay (what is happening to TH right about now).

>>494 You know I was about to reply to NewAnon saying that it's not possible for him to be still so clueless after so many years, then I watched this video you posted and he looks bemused at how what he said might have come off wrong.

Maybe the issue is that he stares so intently at a single point that he loses sight of the bigger picture.

The story is true obviously, he didn't realize the rest of the world wasn't there in South Sudan with him and it's not a story to tell when receiving an award.

>>495 Did he trot out the old 'I can only be responsible for myself and not the reactions of others' line? That's my favorite TH line of late. Even better than his confirmation that Tayto was NOT a stunt - thanks for asking - or his 'everyone has a cameraphone' quote.

497 Name: Couch Potato : 2017-01-09 16:51 ID:Heaven

>>496 No a new one. First he knitted his brows and said "I don't what they are saying" and when TMZ told him people were hating on him and said his speech was self-indulgent he knitted them some more and added "we all just have to do the best we can to help each other out", while his handler said "Tom let's go!"

Here's the non-moving, non-verbal rundown for those who can't stomach the video. The last line of this article is brilliantly correct and cutting:

>>488 Hmm... Sorry about how this came out completely wrong. But, I mentioned that I hadn't seen the other TPVOJS, or Ahmed, specifically to say that was why I wouldn't able to judge the performances in it. I would never ever say that anyone was more worthy than anyone else if I hadn't seen all of the shows : ) AND, the most important thing I said is that the GG awards is glossy awards show given by the press, that GG awards are NOT really about acting skills, in my opinion. Which I DON'T agree with. That's why the people who are most visible in the industry win GG awards, a lot of the time. I don't agree with that. Usually the worthier performance wins the Emmy award. That's why I listed all the splashy movie stars who have golden globe awards, or people who have had visible years in the press win GG awards. I don't agree with that, btw. And that would mean that the right people won the Emmy awards (TPVOJS), and that Ahmed would have been more of a contender there, politically speaking, if had originated the role, and Ben hand't won so recently for the same part. And that's not fair for Ahmed, either. And I don't have heart eyes for Tom, or Jolie, or Markle or anyone else who does charity work : ) Sure don't think that Tom has a Jolie or Bloom like Unicef service record, either. I just feel weird criticizing charity work, until I do more work. Maybe, that's a weird tick.

>>494 It's an odd one. The camera man says repeatedly "I thought it was a beautiful speech", so him saying "thanks" is hardly doubling down. Then as others point out, the cameraman says that others have called it self-indulgent. I can see why TH looked mystified at that point because self-indulgent isn't really what people were saying, and to me that connotes something different, like Goop crying. Which isn't what he did, really. He was humblebragging.

Did the handlers already know or were they righteously suspicious of a TMZ cameraman (who clearly had an angle with all that "Great speech - but everyone else thought it was shit" line)?
