About 60% of the population speak a tonal language we call Mandarin, about 20% of the population (mainly along the coast) speak a non-tonal language we call Cantonese. 20% of the population speak more than a hundred different languages and local dialects, all mutually unintelligible--Fujianese, Hokkien, Shanghaiese, etc.
