On the contrary! It preserves only the beauty of its appearance. What about the beauty of its delicate movements, or of the fleeting half-glanced flashes of colour behind a hedgerow, or of that moment crouching, breath held, watching a butterfly alighted precariously on a flower, afraid that even the slightest movement might scare it off? The particular beauties of living butterflies and of dead butterflies are very different things indeed, yet the difference can be difficult to pin down (pun intended).
