As I was walking home, I saw out of the corner of my eye a tiny flash of colour, fluttering away in the opposite direction. "Aha," I thought to myself, "a butterfly!" Then I realised that, just like the last fifty times this has happened this winter, it must've just been a falling leaf. But then I saw it fly upwards, then duck behind a parked car and disappear. By the time I caught up with it, there was no sign of it. Now I'm utterly mystified - was it a butterfly or not? Evidence against:

  • It's still far too cold for butterflies to be out.
  • It looked to be yellow, and the only entirely yellow butterfly you'd find here is the Clouded Yellow - a migrant from Europe, even less likely to be found in this cold.
  • Leaves blown by the wind have fooled me goodness knows how many times already this winter.

Evidence in favour:

  • The trees have long since shed their leaves; there shouldn't be any still falling at this time of year.
  • It wasn't anywhere near any trees, either.
  • It flew more like a butterfly than like a leaf.
  • I really want it to have been a butterfly.
