"In general, if a Web page has more than three bits of entropy, different browsers will generate extravagantly unique mappings between the Web developer’s intentions and the schizophrenic beast palette that browsers use to paint the world. Thus, picking the “best browser” is like playing one of those horrid trust-building exercises where you decide which three of your five senses you would prefer to lose, and then your coworkers berate you for making different tradeoffs than they made, even though there is no partial ordering that relates scuba diving accidents in which you lose your ears and eyes, and industrial accidents in which you lose your nose and tongue. All options are bad options; it’s a world of lateral moves. Indeed, trying to pick the best browser is like trying to decide which of your worthless children should inherit the family business."

>>275
No one really knows what drives him or what are his goals. Often he says one thing, but does the opposite (indirectly).
E.g. he had said that nobody is going to censor the Internet in Russia, a couple of weeks later a new law was passed expanding list of reasons for a site to be added to Internet Blacklist, plus some blogs and online news agencies were hit with lawsuits, ROSKOMNADZOR warnings, etc.
I have successfully returned home.
Personally I find Putin fascinating. I actually have a collection of Putin pics.
He's a very shrewd, careful individual, which makes him extremely hard to read. He defiantly wants to consolidate and keep control of power, but at the same time he will mostly let people do as they please(although he has restricted this given recent events).
Whether he actually gives a shit about Russia is also very confusing to try to puzzle out. He's perfectly fine with not even being able to drink his own tap water, and he freely admits things are not idealistic in the country while doing nothing to change that, but he also went to great lengths to secure Russias interests in Ukraine and present and good image at Sochi.
For a long time he has been fostering a nationalistic stance in Russia, but strangely it is not very militaristic. That could change soon, but for the past, oh, 15 years or so he's mostly used it as a way to suppress and placate his own population, as oppose to raise them up and excite them in preparation for expansion as it typical.
I think this is also evident in the way he has handled Ukraine. The fact that he has and continues to twist things in the area towards Russias favor with less than 100 people dead is, frankly, miraculous. I don't believe he's out to make a statement or wants to be the next Stalin. Keep in mind he was KGB; he works in the shadows. I think he seriously saw the EU agreement as a threat to Russia's interest, particularly the gas pipeline, and has taken steps to preserve things the way they were for the past 20 years.
I hope this isn't too rambley and maybe helps you decide for yourself.
I see people misspelling 'definitely' as 'defiantly' a lot. I wonder why.
>>282
These words sound similar, so people write it as they hear it. I suppose some neurons misfire in they're heads.
>>282
I agree, it seems to be more frequent as of late.
As is the use of the words 'basically' and 'essentially' as filler. People say them now instead of 'umm' or 'ah', but all they really signify is 'I am thinking of what to say next'.
>>280
I agree with your description of Putin himself.
However, tap water is generally okay to drink, but without filtering you will see limescale eventually build up in your kettle. If you are referring to a rust water in Sochi, it's an evidence of a hastily built piping. There is always some rust after repairs, but leave water pouring for a few minutes and it will clear up. AFAIK, the story about tap water was blown out of proportions in press.
The stance that he has been fostering can be any, but not "nationalistic". "Internationalistic", like Soviets did it, is more like it. He plays patriotism card a lot, but any mention of nationalism is instantly connected to Nazi Germany and WWII as evidenced by how right-wing Ukrainian parties are described in media. Baltic countries got similar treatment too. Right-wing parties and organisations are mostly banned in Russia. Politicians keep saying that the country is multinational and multicultural (in hopes that this make national crisis disappear?). There are even plans to change immigration laws that would legalize hundreds of thousands or even millions of illegal migrants (which mostly come from southern ex-USSR countries) but common people have no say in this.
There is one tell tale sign that what he does is not nationalistic is that he, other politicians and media avoid one word: "русский". They use "россиянин" which was coined by Yeltsin. The former means a very certain major ethnic group in Russia, the latter means a resident of any ethnicity.
For 15 years he was suppressing his people just to isolate the political system from them. FSB was reformed to fight opposition mostly. Media agencies are owned by people close to the government. Bureaucracy is two times larger than USSR despite twice as less population and computerization.
As for Ukraine, Crimea is important because NATO bases there would practically lock down Russian access to the Black Sea. But annexation gave interim government a solid argument: "They took our land!" thus making it important to either take over Eastern Ukraine (= Russian-speaking) or at least assure that it gets broader autonomy. But yes, don't trust Putin when he says anything about helping brother nation.
He is not the next Stalin, but he is the next Brezhnev (high oil prices, even longer time as the head of state - 4+4(+4)+6+6 = 24 vs 18, economy on the brink of stagnation, but without 5 hero of whatever stars). It's bad that Russian economy depends on oil and gas prices so much (see Era of Stagnation). However, Russia and India plan to build a new pipeline through China. Do you remember a certain association named BRICS? Russia sells a lot of military equipment to India, and China is building its aircraft carrying fleet which is fairly useless for takeover of Siberia but essential for domination in the Pacific Ocean.
>>283
You mean they look similar, written. Pronounced orally they don't sound similar enough to be easily confused.
Also, I'm not sure if "He defiantly wants to consolidate and keep control of power" is necessarily an incorrect thing to say about Putin either, from what I've heard. :P
Addendum:
> As is the use of the words 'basically' and 'essentially' as filler.

Five years to the day since an event that didn't happen. Where will I be in five years time, I wonder? Will I still remember? Will I still care?
I typed this up for a forum and then my paranoia about expressing opinion on things under a username kicked in. So here, have this. (On the AVGN Big Rigs episode)
AVGN seems to have either matured or lost his touch, depending on your perspective I guess. Either way this episode had a different vibe to it compared to his "peak" era. It did have some funny moments though.
As for Big Rigs, I don't really see the fascination. Yes, it's shocking that they released the game in such an unfinished state, but it just seems to lack interest beyond that. It's not a game that makes you say "damn, this could have been good" nor one that seems to have much quirkiness or interesting background (c.f. say, Daikatana or Action 52). It's just a not-even-half-finished dull racing game whose only claim to fame is having been sold in its not-even-half-finished state.
An untold and impossible distance beneath the Earth's surface, in a half-flooded cave I stood. The feeble light I carried showed me nothing at all, but somehow I could tell that the priest, whom I had come all this way to see, was here at last.
"I know who you are, and what you're here for." He told me in a creaking voice. He leaned close to me, so close I could feel his breath on my skin. Despite the cold of the cavern, I broke out in a sweat. At last, he banished the harsh silence with a whisper, pregnant with meaning:
"Activate the carbonyl group."
Heh, all you kiddies going on about how Call of Duty killed the FPS genre. It was Half-Life what killed the FPS genre, son.
Killing the FPS genre is a good thing. Half-Life for president.

This is actually a problem with videogames like Skyrim. If player has a very strong daily power, he will probably try to save it for when he really-really needs it which might make him miss that moment (so he'll die and just reload the game). Or, perhaps, he will just abuse waiting: clean a room, wait for 24 hours, clean another room. Wow, what an action superhero! However, if the power is weak the player might just forget about it.
To whomever linked that puzzle:
Argh. I feel as if the solution ought to be this:

This monitor's resolution has a far too long y-axis compared to the x-axis. It reminds me of that part in The Amber Spyglass where what's-her-face uses the titular spyglass and sees that the Dust is flowing far too fast and in the wrong direction. Apart from that the emergency mittens don't have any underlying anti-religious symbolism. As far as I know.

After a long time of not remembering any dreams at all, I'm starting to get vivid and bizarre ones. Of course it's already beginning to slip away but part of last night's was being a king or some other "someone important" and I was with a lady when a hornet landed on my face and I was holding very, very still to avoid getting stung. But next thing I knew I was somewhere else with my royal adviser(? don't really remember who this character was) and I asked him accusingly if he'd used the hornet to anesthetize me, to which he smugly replied in the affirmative and showed me to a mirror. I'd been given a Glasgow smile (not a real big one, but the corners of my mouth were notched) and my ears were cut off to leave bloody slits. None of it hurt though. I also had on dark pink/reddish lipstick, my hair was done up in this huge raven black Asian style crest thing (don't know if it has a name to describe it), and my face was shaved clean so altogether I looked pretty girly, especially since when I undid the hair it all spilled down in rich shiny locks to my waist. But what really annoyed me was how fat I looked in the heavy robe thing I was in, so I threw it off and found that underneath I had some tight, shiny golden leotard thing on, and I'd been given three big breasts.
Later on in the dream, I'd been transferred back to my ordinary self, but this character I'd been previously came to an arranged meeting with me somewhere at night in a car, and when s/he got out of the car s/he grabbed me by the shoulders and started to piss on my sweatpants leg. I said "You can't do this" and s/he said something to the effect of "I can do anything I want." This is about the point at which I woke up.

This whole trend with people saying we should all be totally open about our problems and feelings is hypocritical. It's not bad to be open, but sometimes openness can be a terrible thing, and I think most of the people pushing this don't want to realize that. Some people just have aspects of their personalities that should remain hidden, don't you think?

>>662,668
I have never met a climate change denier in real life either, but I've read around the topic a little and I'm quite interested in the idea. I'd be very grateful if you could briefly explain what, exactly, you believe about climate change and why.
>>672
I don't deny it or affirm it, but I have seen myriads and myriads of studies that claim to conclusively prove things one way or another, followed by revelations that the data was fudged or that some factor wasn't taken into account. For example, recently, been some fuss over a study by John Cook or something, claiming "97% of scientists believe man-made climate change is significant", following which the cited scientists got together and said "No, that's not what we said at all."
The fact that such a paper exists (and the controversy over the paper) tells me that this issue is not being approached in a scientific manner. Science should not be about consensus, it should be about experimental results. It doesn't help that politicians of all shapes and sizes are the loudest voices heard, and they certainly aren't scientific.
So I have resolved not to trust anything on the matter. If I believe one extreme, there's nothing to worry about. If I believe another extreme, it's too late. If I believe somewhere in the middle, I shouldn't buy a Hummer and should use paper bags instead of plastic. But I do that anyway, so there's absolutely no point in committing myself to any kind of "belief".
'Cause I'm your laaaaaaaaaaaaadyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Measures taken against global warming have always been negative instead of positive. Instead of giving grants to small factories in order to greenify their processes, they tax them to oblivion. Instead of improving public transport, they tax and/or prohibit car owners from using their cars. Let's not forget how electronics can boost their value by simply slapping a green sticker on top. A keen observer can notice that these measures only benefit a small business elite; while a polution fee might kill a medium-sized companies, big companies can pay them with ease, likewise car owners are forced to buy new cars every few years benefiting car manufacturers. That's why I don't take it seriously, because politicians sure don't. It's just an excuse to benefit their cronies, as usual.
For some reason everybody around me post Filthy Frank's videos.
So, purely on the basis that it's used as political gameplay (what isn't?), what rational mind comes to the conclusion that it clearly isn't real and everyone who believes otherwise is clearly an idiot? Why be "that guy", one of a minority of hate machines on an otherwise pretty chilled-out BBS?
>>677
If I tell you The world will end, and conveniently you can stop it by giving me all your money,'' is it more rational to decide
The world won't actually end'' or ``That guy's a scam artist, but that sign he was holding is pretty convincing. I bet the world actually is going to end.'' ?
That's probably the way >>675 looks at it, assuming that's who you're responding to. (He's also no more offensive than >>660 or >>661, so please don't perpetuate the cycle of offensiveness.)

>>677
Well, also the fact that any initiative to finally move away from fossil fuels onto thorium or hydrogen is wishy-washy or turned down even though both are 100% feasible on mid to long term. Either global warming isn't that pressing, or mantaining the status quo of the oil economy is more important than the poles melting. AFAIK, politicians still live on planet Earth and are concerned for their own well-being at the very least.

Me too! Maybe it's just the elitism talking, but SAOVQ seems pretty circlejerky to me.
In my experience, SaoVQ and DQN are quite similar, with DQN being more fun. Still torn on whether or not I'd be a dokyun or VIPPER, though. What a conundrum.
How can I improve on post 946 in the change one word thread? It's perfect.

I've spent eight and a half hours awake, doing nothing. Why?
Why are people complaining about global warming on DQN? Don't they know we invented it to get control of the fish industry?
Given that it hasn't actually warmed in almost 20 years now, you're doing a shitty job of it, >>704.
Both sides of this global waning "discussion" are pretty dickly about it.

I need to use the word "loopy" somewhere.
>>728
I think it's because the internet used to be a lot more optional than it is these days, so people thought about it as if it didn't matter.
>>731
People thinking things matter is the foundation of all that is horrifying and trite, surely.
I saw the most amazing butterfly today. I mean really, truly, incredible. It was rather large as butterflies go; at least the size of my palm. In colour, it was sort of beige-ish, with little black spots. The forewings were large and bulbous, and the hindwings had little lobes hanging from them. It also had an unusual way of flying too, mostly gliding with little spurts of energetic flapping. I have absolutely no idea what it was, either.
There's a rat in my room. Wild rats would be cute if they weren't noisy and filthy.
There's more than one, at least 2, and one spooked me in the middle of a scary story. Screw rats.
It isn't sarcasm if you have to end your sentence with a tag.</sargasem>
I enjoy the intellectual superiority of DQN over SAOVQ.
I'll tell you when you're older.

I just got this shirt today. Anyone know if it's a specific character on it? It's my 3rd shirt that has a graphic on it. One's a Yohji tee and the other came for free with a record I bought. This one, however, I bought spur of the moment.

So there I was, computering about, when I happened to look up and see, above a stack of shelves, just where the wall meets the ceiling, a little black shape. Yes, you guessed it (no you didn't), it's a butterfly. Some sort of Nymphalidae; most likely another small tortoiseshell, but I can't tell until I can persuade it to spread its little wings.
I'm dumbfounded by the sheer absurdity of it. For something like this to happen once is an amusing coincidence, but twice, in the same place, to the same person - who coincidentally is also a lepidopterist? (Aside: no, spellcheck, I really did mean "lepidopterist", not "teleprompters") I feel like shouting at the little thing, "What are you doing‽ Don't you know what happened to the last of you who tried to hibernate here‽"
I know it's silly but it winds me up when people call any old image macro a "meme", or am I wrong? I noticed imgur has a “make a meme” button, ehhh?

As the weather had cheered up, I decided to gently persuade my dear guest to leave for greener pastures - and, my goodness, it did not want to go. I managed to catch it under a glass and take it outside, at which point it, hesitantly, flew away... back indoors. I had to catch and release it again, after which it finally conceded and fluttered away, over the hedge and out of sight.
It was a small tortoiseshell after all, and a rather bedraggled specimen at that. I do hope it's happier outdoors - ultimately, all that awaited it here was slowly starving to death, after all. On the other hand, there was also a thunderstorm not long after I sent it on its way. I hope it made it through alright.
Actually, I sort of miss it now.

Niven's Law is: there is nothing so good, no cause so noble, that some of the people in favor of it won't be assholes.
So if bad people can like good things, I am sure that good people can like bad things, even if--especially if--they understand that though they may desire it, they may wish to do it, they mustn't actually DO bad things. I submit it's possible to want to do things while knowing they're bad and wrong, and know better than to actually do them. We can't choose what we desire. We can't choose whether or not to want to do something, only whether we act on it.

It's interesting that saovq has been significantly shittier than DQN for the last 6 or so months. It's usually the other way around. Quality usually shifts back as forth constantly, but DQN has been holding strong while saovq only falls further.

When an Atlantic journalist releases a book titled "The End of Men" (obviously to get more press, with a title like that) that details how women are dominating and continuing to dominate in every job market and how this is basically a good thing, I wonder what exactly she's looking forward to in the new world. Men taking the former role of women as enforced housewives? I think I'll kill myself instead, thanks.
I think I'm simply tired of gender politics. I'm not one of these MRA shitheads. I'm not a misogynist. However, a part of me still wants the vote to go yes. It will be interesting to see what happens if Scotland independences. I don't have much thought on Scotland beyond associating their accent with cheesy fantasy dwarves. And I guess they have highlands and aren't well liked by the English.
