Know what it is? I spent half of today analysing mass spectrometry fragmentation patterns, shouting angrily at pieces of paper; I wish I didn't know what mass spectrometry is.

On the other hand, I really don't know how to make grenades out of it. I was thinking at the time that the word "fragmentation" will only ever remind me of mass spectrometry from now on, then struggled to think of another association of the word. Eventually, I thought of fragmentation grenades, then thought "Mass spectrometry fragmentation grenades? That's silly!" Then I posted it here.

>I spent half of today analysing mass spectrometry fragmentation patterns, shouting angrily at pieces of paper; I wish I didn't know what mass spectrometry is.

I know this feeling, and in truth it colored my response. I tried to figure out what you meant, and when I couldn't I thought, "Maybe they added 'Mass spectrometry fragmentation' to 'grenade' to make it sound cool.". And then I thought "This little pissant, he does he know the HELL that mass spectrometry creates? Does he know what its like to look at pattern after pattern and try to figure out WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE THIS IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THIS or WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IT COULD BE 5 DIFFERENT THINGS? Why does he speak so lightly of mass spec?"

So I responded rather elitistly responded. I shall release calming emergency mittens in apology.

As I was walking home, I saw out of the corner of my eye a tiny flash of colour, fluttering away in the opposite direction. "Aha," I thought to myself, "a butterfly!" Then I realised that, just like the last fifty times this has happened this winter, it must've just been a falling leaf. But then I saw it fly upwards, then duck behind a parked car and disappear. By the time I caught up with it, there was no sign of it. Now I'm utterly mystified - was it a butterfly or not? Evidence against:

  • It's still far too cold for butterflies to be out.
  • It looked to be yellow, and the only entirely yellow butterfly you'd find here is the Clouded Yellow - a migrant from Europe, even less likely to be found in this cold.
  • Leaves blown by the wind have fooled me goodness knows how many times already this winter.

Evidence in favour:

  • The trees have long since shed their leaves; there shouldn't be any still falling at this time of year.
  • It wasn't anywhere near any trees, either.
  • It flew more like a butterfly than like a leaf.
  • I really want it to have been a butterfly.

Ah, what an oversight! Of course there is a yellow butterfly native to England; the Brimstone! In fact, the Brimstone is supposedly where the word butterfly comes from, for being a "butter-coloured fly". They're also one of the earliest to come out of hibernation, lending further support to the butterfly-not-a-leaf hypothesis.
