Even in under Ivan "the terrible" serfs had certain rights and their lords had certain duties toward them in exchange, while Peter "the great", the supposed westernizer, converted them basically into chattel slaves.

This idea of the Romanovs as enlightened despots and the Rurikoviches as half-mongol savage khans is one of the biggest PR cons in modern history tbh.

The original experimental treatment for "pernicious anemia," a deadly affliction that occurs when cells in your stomach lining stop being able to secrete a protein critical for absorbing Vitamin B12, was having a healthy person eat something (usually raw meat but I'm not sure if that was important), vomit it up and then feed the vomit to the sick person. They would then absorb the necessary protein from the vomit.

I bring this up because humans are animals.

erm, it was an amusing thought whereby i was wondering what mechanism might make it possible, and i felt it was something that godlike (but foolish) beings wanting to populate a different universe by copying the "AI" from their Our-Universe computer that's getting a little old and slow might try

and because that crowd is simultaneously medium-high in INT and extremely low in WIS, i thought the infomercial-like incompetence would be a bit amusing, but i think actually it would just be like a normal season of Survivor, except it doesn't end. so in my scenario nobody misses them not because nobody would, but because they are clones.

>>731
Read lots of books, 80/20 style; record anything you want to keep remembering in SRS software like Anki (this is a thing you have to meta-study), don't forget to apply things practically or you'll just be a consumer and not a producer. don't get discouraged by the puffery you see on places like Hacker News or from the superstar open-source devs, a lot of these people are in fact better than lots of others at programming, but the degree to which this is true seems like pure vanity to me. "the complete software developer's career guide" is one of several books that can give you some pointers on how to get started, but there's no be-all end-all out there.

(source: I am still struggling to find a job after graduating years ago and programming since childhood in the 90s; every rejection has so far vindicated of my abusive parents in regards to my worthlessness, and I live with those narcissists, so my brain comes up with the counterproductive solution, "well, we're just not going to apply that much")

I forgot study materials. Now, you could indebt yourself to a university like my parents forced me to (it took me nine years, not because I am that stupid, but because they have interrupted my work every single fucking day and I was severely depressed for a long time. I have to fight for every moment of clarity so hard and I want to help you because I feel this pain so keenly).

Today you can just choose a curriculum like teachyourselfcs.com and be on your way. Many people (unlike my parents and many educators) claim the diploma doesn't matter, I don't know to what extent they are telling the truth. I have the slip of paper, did very well at an interview at a tech giant, and they still decided "no hire".

> i thought the infomercial-like incompetence would be a bit amusing

If you are serious, you do have to keep in mind that professional game journalists, that is, the game journalists that are paid to write about video games, are first and foremost communication and journalism majors and "gamers" second. I don't think general incompetence at common tasks is that characteristic for most of them.

Also at least some them must feel stuck in some sort of game journo rut and being virtually kidnapped must get them off a little bit since surely it must make for some good reporting, right? That's assuming they're not aware they are replicas.

How to become a programmer? Depends when you're asking.
If you haven't tried anything yet, follow some "learn [language] from scratch" tutorials. You'll have to find them yourself, but you might like to start with something like Python, Ruby, or Clojure. They're popular with hobbyists and professionals alike, so a good tutorial can help you feel like you're getting somewhere useful quickly.

If you've already done that though, and can write a small program by yourself, I recommend learning a completely different language. Seriously. The more languages you know, the more you can tell whether you're learning how to write programs (good) or just how to use that specific language (not so good). If your language describes itself as "object-oriented", learn one that describes itself as "functional", and vice-versa. Or swap "dynamic" with "static" types.
Specifically, http://learnyouahaskell.com/ is a great from-scratch tutorial for a statically-typed functional language.
And https://docs.racket-lang.org/ assumes you know some basic concepts of programming but is a very good learning resource for a dynamically-typed language.
(These are not particularly popular languages but you may appreciate what you can learn from them, even if you never use them again).
There are obviously other languages, but hopefully some searching around will give you other avenues to search.

Finally, if you're asking with a couple of months of experience under your belt and are still wondering what to do next in order to turn programming into a career, practice. Write programs for yourself. Write programs that solve problems you have, or automate tasks, or do something interesting you've never programmed before (e.g. use a SQLite database or a TCP socket or an FFI for a C library, or a GUI). Write text games or graphical games. Pick a simple utility program on your computer and replicate it. Write medium-sized programs with multiple moving parts -- programs like that might seem daunting at first, but you'll be fine.
Importantly, don't be afraid to drop a project and go on to something else. Think of programming as art, and programs as sketches. Every failed program taught you something. If you want, try writing it again, but do something different. Different language? Different architecture? Different libraries?

After that, you'll only get better at it. The nature of the puzzles in programming naturally help you become a self-directed learner, so you only have to rely on your patience, curiosity, and google-fu to learn more. At this point, if you don't feel ready to apply for a job, do it anyway. A junior position at a larger company will show you the low bar your peers are meeting (seriously) and the high bar the seniors can help you reach (they will want to help you).
