Remember when I linked to the psychic gossip site that said TH would have some hard times and the comments were mentioning drugs? >>251 And it was so ridiculous...

He may be on drugs...or the dancing bear has come out of hibernation. Even MA is thinking, 'Shit, I'm not willing to go this far to save this damn film!'

>>901 I'd say he's on a high from the success of Colbert and just like the psychic predicted, has believed his own PR. It's a shame he didn't let it lie, it was great once, cringeworthy twice. If there's a third repetition I will have to moon walk away

Apparently there was drama at the DC Screening/Q&A on Tuesday. Talk of people entering with fake tickets which barred people who bought real tickets from getting in. http://fandomnerd66.tumblr.com/post/141943701086/gitsie007-allthyvexations-wthanon4u#notes

>>903 Of course there was. Seemingly, there always is with TH. That link, however, reminds me of Miss Unrelated: he helped me through a dark time, I wanted to ask him a question I've had for so many years, my day was ruined (even though she herself seems to have had a fake ticket) by thoughtless other fans.

He needs 'No Direct Fan Questions' written large in his promo contracts. Large. Even for crap movies that he needs to sell hard.

I saw Colbert and I was impressed - again! I have to hand it to Colbert - he is a very good interviewer (an underrated art). Original questions, not afraid to show he is intelligent and the man can sing! (Colbert, I mean).

I liked the anecdote about the spoon damage, and TH's telling of it - "It's a nice memory now - or so she claims". When you get him off "I spent 6 weeks living with a gifted musician whose name is Rodney Crowell" he is a charming, clever and witty interviewee.

Interesting article in the Daily Beast. Contrary to CB this is not the full article but hs some nice tidbits about TR:

I'm going to say some novenas for Thor3 being his Marvel endpoint.

>>905 I finally caught up on the Horowitz podcast and Colbert last night. I thought both were great. Listening to the podcast, I can see what TH might have see/did see/does see (take your pick) in EO. She was funny and interesting - and her voice/laugh sounded much better than they sometimes do!

His stories were right on in the podcast. I think that there was no mention of RC and then the obligatory trotting out of the southern accent - that was nice. There was mention of the yodel, but not the stock phrase he's used to discuss it or a demo. Bonus, bonus!

Colbert touched my heart with mention of his Classics degree. And there should be a mic drop when people read Plato in the original Greek - shit's hard. He plays the spoons well - Archipelago should have just been him playing the spoons.

Longish and quite interesting interview on radio in NYC. Some familiar stuff, but expressed in a much less hackneyed way. At about 8.00 he denies point blank being a smoker and at about 11 denies having sung ever previously...! http://youtu.be/T6pe9h-5P5w

Also says that he will be filming TR from July in Australia for 6 months. I suppose he will be back home for a few months' rest after this tour.

>>921 'I did not have sexual relations with that cigarette...or Tinkerbell.'

If he's quit I might believe he and EO are on the outs. I think his 'I smoked with Hank' answer earlier was really a 'I smoked while spending a lot of time with my smoker co-star.' Damn, I was actually hoping they'd get married in Vegas, in white fringe. Okay, single, female country music stars - he's headed your way, make your moves!

I guess, technically, he didn't sing in TPF. You can't call what he did 'singing.'

He'd never make it as a politician with his schizophrenic answers - someone would call him out.

923 Name: Anon : 2016-03-31 13:11 ID:qAvx5iXW

>>922 Yes, you articulate what was lurking unformed in my mind. Speaking as an ex smoker, it is very context-specific. If I had married a smoker I still would smoke.

Did you listen to it? He said - exact words - "No, no, I'm not [a smoker]" and that he didn't smoke real cigarettes while playing HW. Conspiracy theorists and fans of metaphor may find it amusing that he previously said to the Guardian "I did [smoke] a bit when I played Hank. A stupid idea". So how we know that in about September last year he thought that dating a smoker was stupid. See, it all fits in with that "they broke up" story in November...!!!!!!!!! (I'm joking here)(maybe).

I'll agree that it's stupid to take up smoking as a way to spend time with someone - if that's what he meant.

I think he could still smoke socially but not consider himself 'a smoker.'

>>921 When the interviewer said, 'I wish CP had done better,' my buttocks clinched. Sorry your previous movie was crap. Best of luck on this also crap movie! How do these people get their jobs?

He's off to SF tomorrow, then Vegas for those awards, then North Dakota, Nebraska (shout out to Anon and qaz), then every Canadian province and finally that research center in Antartica. Then TNM promo begins!

>>936 I know it's mostly thin. I think I liked that one because it was 20 minutes and didn't feel rushed like these 5 minute tv slots. Getting desperate!

I tell you what, I did listen to the Favorite Song broadcast with John Benjamin Hickey (I only had time to post the link before). If you want a meaty interview that's your one. JBH is another good interviewer and very knowledgeable and passionate about music generally - as is TH, slightly to my surprise. It was a pleasure listening to him talk about a passion instead of dutifully plugging the product.

JBH adroitly steered him away from Hank until the very last song. Even then it was "why does this song have such universal appeal" and not "tell us about the time you had sex with Rodney and then played him a song and smoked a herbal cigarette after".

And on grinds the publicity tour. I have to hand it to him for continuing to polish this turd so assiduously. It must be incredibly demoralising.

>>940 Oh, god. As unfunny as TH can be...Loki'd, anyone? - Jim Carrey is even unfunnier. April Fool's is also good for showing you what terrible things can be dreamed up. Let's pray it's a joke.

>>942 It was at 12% at one point, but is now at 16%. The guy from the Globe gave is 3.5/4 stars and called it better than Walk the Line. It could become a little Marmite with time.

>>942 So, it's still only playing at the Angelika here. It's not anywhere else - not even next week! Not at either AMCs in the Village. These theatres tend to get most major releases, so this release is going to be small, or filter late into major theaters from the arthouses.

The problem is the Angelika is usually full of pretentious Soho types. And what with non-banked seats (I'm a shorty) and dodgy sound, it's just not a nice place to see a film. But maybe that will work with this film! I can't see or hear it...it's great! I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go this weekend because I'm thinking I might not get the chance if I don't go soon.

It will be on Sunday when the boy's at work (shhhh, he must never know!). If I do go, I'll report back.

Have a great weekend everyone.

It does not surprise me at all though, American country music is absolutely unpopular in LT. If not for TH, I would still have no idea who HW was.

The only reference to ISTL I found in Lithuanian internets is a short video featurette on one of our news websites (a very popular one and actively commented on, BTW!) and it has no comments, no nothing, and the total number of views of 921. Three of those are mine.

Something about this makes me think it was transcribed by a non English speaker. Sounds too curt to be him, apart from anything else. And the idiom sounds wrong). Or, it was one interview which has been sold to lots of people and cut down by them.

I am sure she helped him to buy the items but the combo is not good (blue fancy suit jacket with black jeans, grey boots and different blue shirt - fairly uncoordinated if you ask me). It looks like what I suspect it is - TH opens suitcase and selects one shirt, one pair trousers, one jacket, one pair shoes and puts them all on. Or do we now believe she appears at his bedside every day and lays out his clothes? (shades of Louis XIV)

>>951 That must be it - or something along those lines.

>>956 >>957 It's a large country with lots of local news/entertainment outlets, and they all want their pound of flesh. Sony hasn't gone in for half measures, that's for sure.

>>956 The Verge article: the The Work argument doesn't fly very far, not with his expanded 'team.' Having a groomer and paying someone to pick out your socks doesn't scream 'Work.' It points to someone who very much wants to influence people's opinions. Which is fine - being an actor means playing the fame game. But don't be all 'I'm above that' about it. And, if this is some way to passively protect his private life, why be passive about it? If someone asks him about his private life, he shouldn't give them the 'it's really about the work' spiel, he should tell them that his private life is private and he's not going to talk about it. Why he seems incapable of this direct approach baffles me.

I'm going to the 10:00pm showing of ISTL - late enough? It will just be me and the dodgy TH/EO fans in raincoats. I'll give a spoiler-free review on Monday.

>>960 I thought the remark was maybe about all those terrible reviews for ISTL - which nobody has dared ask him about, I notice. You pick your projects, you do the work and you don't pay attention to people's opinions.

I can respect him for not running away screaming "it's shit and it's not my fault!" Lots of actors get embarrassed about publicising something once it's become clear it is a critical flop, and I find that really unattractive.

Equally it's fine to realise that you get the odd spot and, if left alone, dress like a homeless person, and want to do something about those things. I suppose most actors use stylists and makeup artists to some degree. But the sudden explosion of Team Tom says to me he wants that fame thang real bad right now. So his comments come off badly.

He doesn't really do things by halves does he? It makes me think of the Thor 2 tour - he had a makeup person and Olly and I think someone else travelling with him then, and he was just as mad - turning up to the opening of an envelope all across SE Asia. Yet at SDCC last year he was wearing his own "creations". Maybe he embraces all this only to the extent that the studio pays for his entourage?

I got wrapped up with Easter: two church services (he's not Catholic and always wants to keep up the Protestant side!) and then Easter lunch with friends followed by Easter dinner with family. I read the DM's account, so I know what happens. I'll do it tomorrow after work. I'll use it as a palate cleanser after ISTL!

>>962 I will always connect The Work to The Personal Life because it first popped up a few days after Pap Night. Remember the Facebook post: how grateful he was for The Work and that people enjoyed The Work. Read: Ignore that I have a FWB, ignore that she hates photographers but loves gates, ignore that we may be leveraging this relationship for the film's benefit.

But I can see it perhaps being about shit reviews. I think it's just good manners that interviewers don't disparage the product. That or playing nice with studios to maintain future access. I can see No-name online magazine maybe not getting a press pass for another Sony movie if they mention how crap ISTL is.

Quick review of ISTL. The opening scene of Tom signing was the highlight of the movie; it was drastically better than when we first saw that Wheatland video. All the actors did well. Cherry was excellent. The common review highlight about the editing and leaving out key chunks of his life - true. The Luke the Drifter persona was creepy.

>>969 I don't know what my best part of it was. I can't even say TH because of the writing.

There were five people in the theatre (one couple, two singles an Yes, it was 10:00 on a Sunday night, but five is still piss-poor for any movie in NYC - no matter day or time. The place itself was fairly busy with only a few empty tables in the cafe and couches in the lounge.

Here's the rundown (SPOILERS - not really). Hank Williams: got married, loved his wife, had a baby, sang some songs, fell in love with a garage door, fought with his wife, did the dirty on his wife, used his hat as an accountant, drank, divorced his wife, got a second wife, had some back pain, died.

Editing - Everything was just chopped up like mince. There's no continuity. A scene would fade out and I'd be left thinking 'What did I get from that? How does this fit in with the story?' And then it would jump to a completely new, unrelated scene without any context from the previous one/s. The faux interviews and home movies don't really pull the story together - if they were even meant to. It's just a composite of scenes with no transition. This is worse at the start and gets better mid-movie.

Writing - God Almighty! I was cringing at nearly every section of dialogue. People didn't speak like that in the 1940/50s - people don't speak like that today. And surprise, surprise, the dialogue has no transition/flow - just like the editing. It jumps all over the place too.

Weather - Watch what MA does with weather and the story. It's a little hokey, but it's one of the few things that actually adds some depth to the movie.

Pace: Weird. So slow mostly (two hours seems like three). There are parts with momentum, but mostly it just drags.

Performances: THEO work with what they've got. Those of you who have trouble with the accents...you're not going to make it! Both TH and EO's voices started to drive me crazy at around the one hour mark. The crap dialogue doesn't help. They do have chemistry in that you believe the romantic parts and you believe their fights. Their performances are so heartfelt, you can tell they both pulled out all the stops acting wise and are just as let down by the script/editing as the audience. Despite her annoying character, at the end I felt more for Audrey than Hank - he didn't do right by her! TH may have sympathy for HW, but I didn't. TH's singing was very good as Whats said. They should have anchored the story around the songs/stage performances more.

Overall: To paraphrase the announcer at the end, 'This is the hardest thing I've ever had to say...you just wasted 15 bucks, 3 mini bottles of Chardonnay and two hours of your life on this movie.'

>>970 No, but tell us how you really felt.

Sob. What a waste of a good cast and a great life story/music.

None of this surprises me. Whenever MA has been able to wrest the mic away from TH (and apparently at the SF q&a, TH quite literally tried to snatch it off him!) he has said three things. First, he has no idea why HW was a musical genius. Second, he wanted to step away from the tried and tested magic of chronological storytelling. Third, that he was more interested in the man than the music. It seems that when you combine these three factors, what you end up with is anecdote soup.

And TH doesn't even look cute in the pics I have seen. It's out in the UK on 6 May. I need to steel myself to be a good fangirl.

Speaking of TH wresting the mic from MA, take a look at the link I posted yesterday to the Bay Area interview. It is unintentionally hilarious - TH looks bored and resentful every time MA talks (maybe he has now realised that MA can't direct and that everyone is calling the movie I Saw the Shite). Then at 5.30 he loses the will to live and starts flirting with the camera!

>>977>>981 Torrilla had a gif of Keith and Nicole clapping, with TH a little bespectacled blot on the horizon - looking more than a bit uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, I suspect this was a relatively recently booked gig. Before TIFF the plan was for the movie to be released in September, all the publicity done at that time, with hopes of Oscar nominations this February. Back in July/August last year there would be no perceived need to book TH to appear at an awards ceremony in April, way after the movie had been released and all the acting awards ceremonies were done and dusted. My guess is that this was booked more recently as part of the March/April publicity tsunami. No get out for it being a bad decision!

I felt a bit sorry for him. There were pics of him milling around on the RC with all the other country d listers looking a bit lost. They also interviewed him and asked who he most wanted to see perform, and he had obviously got no idea! It must be pretty grim to attend a 3h award ceremony for music you know nothing about on your own, and have to make polite chat with people who don't know who you are, or who think your project sucked. It must be a lonely life at times. I'm not sure he's the type to fill his hotel room with Las Vegas hookers (looking at you, Prince Harry!).

OT: Nicole got the idiom right - she was rocking a 40-year old ex Southern belle Steel Magnolia meets gothic bride look. Sequins and a lot of net. Not at all her Oscar RC look!

That tweet is easy to search for because of the misspelling of EO's name. She does live in LA and seems to write for tv shows. And now you all know my researcher secret! A supervisor once said to me 'Look for the mistakes first. Those are always the most interesting.' The source doesn't say they met in 2014. The journalist does.

Anyway the point I think Anon is making is that the substantive part of the story - EO seen several times in Hawaii - and the blogger's comment are both consistent with what she saw on Twitter. Maybe the source is a complete fabrication and stumbled on the truth by accident, but there appears to be some independent evidence that the underlying facts are true.

I don't think this "source" has any more valid information than the "source" that said EO dumped TH to focus on her career, or the "source" that said TH dumped EO so he could sleep around during SI filming.

Sure, they actually met back in 2011, but that was a fairly brief, transitory meeting at an audition and if they only saw each other in passing - at events and the like - then working together on ISTL might be considered a proper meeting.

Either way, as Anon said, it's OK mag: the source may be correct buy the author did a shit job of background checking.
