For me it was twofold: forcing myself to work more and better-quality hours (which led not only to larger paychecks but also raises, YMMV obviously) and being more judicious with my spending. I used to spend basically all of my after-bills income on things I wanted but didn't really need. At a certain point, after a series of events (some but not all of which were my own dumb fault), I found myself a few thousand dollars in debt and it made me reevaluate my habits. I eventually climbed out of it and decided to try to keep my new habits. Right now I have enough to cover about a month's worth of expenses in checking and roughly double that in savings. It's not that much, really, but it's still very comforting and I feel a lot more in control of my life than I did before.

If you're straight-up not making enough money to save for a rainy day fund, I'm afraid I can't really offer a lot of help there. But if you are making enough money, the math is pretty simple. Spend less than you make. Make more than you spend. Choose one of those (I chose the latter), and repeat it to yourself any time you're about to make a purchasing or work-related decision. Figure out exactly how much you pay for bills each month, and try to spend as little above that as possible and make as much above that as possible. Do make sure you have enough food, and that it's good food (i.e. not mac&cheese and ramen, get fresh fruits and veggies...plus beans, rice, lentils, and potatoes are all cheap and reasonably good; cooking your own meals can save you tons over eating out). Set a maximum spending limit, and put everything past that in a separate less-accessible place. It doesn't matter whether that means a savings account at the bank or an old crinkled envelope in the back of your bookshelf, the point is putting it where you don't feel like you can just spend it if you feel like it. And it's important to do this right when you cash your paycheck before you start spending it, to avoid temptation. You still have the money, but try to live without it if you can.

Once you're in the black, save up for specific, larger things like a computer or a car or that one figurine you've always wanted or whatever (why not make a list of things to save up for and plan things out ahead of time so you can remind yourself why you're saving), but never "reward" yourself by draining your savings account. I recommend waiting until you have at least twice as much saved up as you plan to spend. It's hard, and let me tell you it hurts sometimes and it feels like it'll take literally forever to get anywhere that matters, but if you can force yourself to hold to your budget, you'll be so much better off.

I'd like to clarify my earlier comments about my ongoing alien abduction experiences. Firstly, to use the term "abduction" is unfair. Unfortunately, the aliens that seek my company have no way to get in touch with me and must resort to what you might call "abduction." Though we have attempted to seek a better way to communicate, their appendages are not suitable for use with human cell phones. I am presently modifying a flute, which I think will emulate their control mechanisms and make an adequate keypad for them. As you know from the past posts, I left a lawn chair on board their ship since their relaxation tubes are not humanoid-compatible. Unfortunately this last visit, I found it missing and was informed that it now in their version of a museum. From the picture they showed me, it appears that the representation of a human being they placed on it is not at all accurate. The strange sculpture is bright pink, has huge tusks, is covered entirely in thick hair and is wearing what I'd best describe as flannel armor. I'm thinking of getting a proper mannequin for them, but I'm not sure how I go about buying one without sounding like some sort of freak.

On the other hand, I really don't know how to make grenades out of it. I know this feeling, and in truth it colored my response. I tried to figure out what you meant, and when I couldn't I thought, "Maybe they added 'Mass spectrometry fragmentation' to 'grenade' to make it sound cool.". And then I thought "This little pissant, he does he know the HELL that mass spectrometry creates? Does he know what its like to look at pattern after pattern and try to figure out WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE THIS IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THIS or WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IT COULD BE 5 DIFFERENT THINGS? Why does he speak so lightly of mass spec?"

So I responded rather elitistly responded. I shall release calming emergency mittens in apology.
