I vaguely recall someone saying that /dqn/ gets a surprising number of unique views per day. I wouldn't be surprised if there's 50 posters, but probably only about 15 of them post regularly.

27 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8110 08:39

Don't forget some of the SAoVQs and at least two new bloods from 8ch. I can confirm two positively because another one posted who was not me.

But then, one of you two who were talking is probably the right-wing guy, and either the other one or the Italian is probably the control tower GM.

So probably more like 10, actually.

28 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8110 10:33

>>27
I am DQN and SAoVQ dual-heritage native, and I bet there are a couple others of the same blood who also started talking about SAoVQ when a refugee brought it up. If true, that also brings the numbers down slightly.
I do doubt the right-wing, the Italian and the GM are fewer than three people, though -- and unless my memory is of the wrong BBS, there's at least one other UK than me here (lives in Bristol, or Birmingham, or something). I think there was a Scot at some point as well. I still don't know what that means for numbers and I'm probably BSing myself at this point.

29 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8110 14:00

What are you all talking about? There are only 6 of us. At least, that's how that old statement goes...

At least I googled it some time in the past and think I know what it means. According to Wikipedia, it's "someone who is extremely foolish." I invented a new drink. It's where you eat a bowl of ice cream, and let it sit for a while without cleaning it. Then you use your fingernails to scrape up the dried sticky stuff at the bottom. You probably won't get a lot with one bowl, so repeat until you get a sufficient amount. After you're done, pour yourself a glass of water and drop the chunks of dried sticky stuff in. Don't stir, and let them sink to the bottom. Begin drinking. It will kind of be sweet and you'll occasionally get some of the sweet chunks. Then when you get finish off the water, there will still be some chunks left you can lick up.

Now I'm imagining a bullet hell game where the various boss's shots are all triggered by the music's drum channels. As you knock weapons off it, the drum sounds go away too.

45 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8112 08:03

Do people do low-score challenges in bullet hell games? I mean obviously you could score low just by dying on purpose and using as many continues as possible, but in order to 1cc/no death a game and still have as low a score as possible you'd need some skill in the game too. Since such a challenge would require the player to be fully aware of the tricks and strategies that make up the "optimum" play style and then purposely ignore them while still clearing the game.

Can't any description of a plot be the description of a parody.

Austin powers is a movie about a spy sent into the future to take down his arch nemesis.

Spaceballs is a film that takes place in the future on a planet where resources are low. Looking for a solution, the emperor of this planet plots to steal the resources of a neighboring planet by kidnapping their princess. The story follows the heroic adventures of a mercenary and his sidekick in their attempts to save the princess.

Is it a genuine show of support, or is it a tasteless joke? Is it a commentary on the shallow people who post flags on social media to look like they care? Is it saying that everyone, no matter what they do or are known for should speak up when something like this happens? Is it the first seasonal lemon party, or have I missed dozens over the years?

While >>98 was mostly a joke, I'll try to give you a serious reply. I'm not a psychologist or a philosopher so I don't really know the answer, but I'll give you my thoughts.

For your question, if you have proof that you are the best at some competition or skill, then yes you could recognize this and still manage to live humbly. For the post I made, I was referring to thinking you are better than other people overall without any reference to a particular competition or skill. I've noticed some people only intellectually recognize that they aren't the best but still act as if they were. My joke was that much like how alcoholics must recognize their problem in order to cure it, narcissists must also recognize that they think they are the best in order to recover. In the end, it was a stupid joke that didn't really convey what I was thinking.

The deep irony is that everyone's now flattering you for displaying the same deep cynicism and contempt you have just called out, while writing something actually much more vague, stale and overstated in both past and present than >>173

Yet it's "post-sincere" enough for other cynical morons who think they've "outgrown" the cynical morons who also think they've "outgrown" the angrily misguided cynical morons originally being complained about to approve.

Moral consistency now demands that they also laud and expand upon this post-post-post-cynical retort for its appeal to the "even more biggerer picture" and self-referentiality.

Also, a prematurely old soul is, some might argue, the exact opposite of immaturity, so one might critique the application of the insults just as much as the spirit in which they are made.

>cynical morons who think they've "outgrown" the cynical morons who also think they've "outgrown" the angrily misguided cynical morons originally being complained about to approve.

This might be an accurate description of me (although it's hard to admit, and I really hope it isn't true). What are you by the way? Are you a cyncical moron? Or a cynical smart guy? What am I? Am I a optimistic moron? Or a cynical moron disguised as an optimistic moron? What "should" I be? What would you prefer the people around you to be (internet and irl)? What do you want to be? Sincere? Ironic? Cynical? What's your view on how >>173 writes?

>Moral consistency now demands that they also laud and expand upon this post-post-post-cynical retort for its appeal to the "even more biggerer picture" and self-referentiality.

What does this mean? Is that what I'm doing right now? "Should" I not? Are you the post-post-post-cynical retort? Does that make me the post-post-post-post-cynical retort? Do you mean that based upon the morality I've displayed, to be consistent with it, I must praise your post? What morality have I displayed? Is my morality "bad"?

Honestly, I'm just not sure what a lot of your post means. Not that it doesn't make sense to a person more knowledgeable about what your saying. This is the first time I've heard words such as post-irony or post-sincere. I looked them up and they're really cool terms that I can relate to in a way. In fact, your whole post is pretty cool (I guess you were right that I'd praise your post if that's what you meant, but I hope I'm not praising your post just to be morally consistent). I understand a lot of my post fits post-irony or post-sincerity or whatever else, but I hope you don't think I'm doing this to prove some point and that I'm not being sincere when I say I want to hear more about what your saying.

tl;dr: I think what your saying is pretty interesting and would like to hear more about it.

Drama? If this is drama, you're contributing to it with your link. It's very mild if it is drama. Personally, I'm enjoying it whatever it is.

Anyways, interesting read. Although it assumes that getting shelter and sustenance is easy for everyone, it can easily relate to people such as ourselves who are able to afford luxuries such as the internet. It also assumes that you won't get chronic and intense pain, but still, for people who this is not the case (which is most likely all of us here), this advice is pretty sound.

The death thing is also pretty interesting. I once attended a lecture where a man told a story with a message similar to this. His daughter had asked him what it would be like after she died. And he asked her "Do you remember what it was like 20 years ago?" She responded that she didn't know because she wasn't born yet. He said "That's what it will be like after you die." I think it's hard for people to understand what it's like to be unconscious since it's something that can't be experienced. This is why it's hard to realize that you aren't going to be some floating entity in a void after you die. I know this took me a while to realize, and this realization has pretty much calmed my fear of death.

I wouldn't say these four remedies cures my suffering (not that I think I suffer much), but it would be something that I could contemplate on when I am suffering. Sometimes you can see a message such as the one you posted, understand what it means and why it is being said, but still not understand deeply enough the implications to have some meaningful change in your life.

I used to think about it as an eternity of nothingness at some point as well. The concept of not existing is hard to grasp, harder to describe. But considering that my sleep often consists of a few minutes half-awake fantasy then cuts to waking up with a few hours missing in-between, I guess I'll be fine non-existing.

What worries me is that I often mismanage my time, waste it, do simple, quick stuff slowly and so on. The lesser concern would be leaving a mark in history or getting a bit of fame, but that's selfish and unimportant. I just want to have some sensible fun with my time!

It is quite stupid, I agree. At least when people can just link it here and get a bunch of people banned (which is exactly what happened here).

For now I've disabled it, but probably only temporarily. Please understand that textboards like this can have serious spam problems. A good example is /soc/. So sometimes a heavy-handed script like this is necessary.

Sadly sometimes people run archive scripts (which is totally OK in my view) and accidentally get banned. So the current abc.pl causes some problems even without being linked here.

Thanks to whoever it was that got banned and linked these posts in his/her email!

Did you make sure to unban everyone from 1993-09-8127 23:51 onward? I'd hate to lose some members who are too shy to email you for an unban.
As for the bot problem, you can keep the link if you include a captcha on abc.pl that will unban you if you fill it out in a certain amount of time. You could also look at the website referer to abc.pl, and if it refers to the front page or is blank, you could ban the ip.

Our collective mind is unstable. We feel that one wrong idea would make us collapse even if only briefly. Those who don't feel this way assume that stable ideas are equivalent to right ideas. What's led to our constant self-criticism through others and ourselves? What's led us to prematurely defend ourselves by being half sincere and/or vague? We see each other as agressors, and when we form ideas, we attack them as others might attack us, so we can ensure their safety. Rarely do we see a safe idea. Who would ever admit to an unsafe idea when they could be hurt? I know I wouldn't. So I'll continue to be vague at the expense of being comprehendable. And when I'm called out on my bullshit, I'll respond insincerely.

Knowledge usually lives in three stages:

1) Some premise is, obviously, the reason for a conclusion.

  • Cold weather gives you a cold, duh!

2) Turns out the premise isn't really the cause for the conclusion.

  • Cold weather doesn't carry the virus of cold, what are you, like dumb or something?!?!?!?

3) The premise is somewhat correlated to the conclusions, but isn't the direct cause. Some additional counter-intuitive premise was necessary to reach the conclusion.

  • Extreme cold weather, under specific circumstances, might weaken your immune system and give you a cold if the virus is somewhere in the air.

This pattern seems to repeat pretty much everywhere (red meat causes cancer, fasting makes you fat, walking 10 minutes a day delays premature aging, watching porn lowers your testosterone, etc). What's more annoying is the horde of smartass DQNs who kind of reached the third phase but didn't read the reddit article in its entirety, blessing us with "Aspartame Actually Causes Cancer, But Not For The Reasons You Think!" clickbait articles and insufferable atheists in Internet forums.

Nowadays I don't care about "petty" scientific findings anymore, I always assume the premise is a bit related to the conclusion for unknown counter-intuitive reasons and try not to say anything when someone brings up a "well-known fact" that never made it past the first stage in mainstream media.

I was watching an anime from this season that I usually enjoy, but for some reason, it just seemed more boring than usual. Then I picked up a new show, and I thought that this seems like a below average show. Then I tried watching something in my backlog, but still, I couldn't enjoy it like I usually could. That's when I realized that it wasn't the anime that was bad. It was my mood that was bad. I needed to be studying for finals, which was causing me stress, so I associated these feelings with my opinion of the show. I wonder how often people project their current emotions on to some media and think that's how they feel about it. Then they come up with elaborate explanations to justify this. They compare the show to something they liked before and see what's different, so that they can give a "well-thought-out" evaluation of the anime. Or maybe I'm just wrong.

Imagine "Just let it happen" lessons in schools that have "avoid body harm" as their utmost priority. Awful! But that's what counter-terrorism instructions tell us. Basically, if you're held hostage "do whatever terrorists demand you to do, keep away from the windows, assume the party escort submission position when police forces assault the place."

I wish they would raise all the speed limits by 5-15 mph and ticket anyone going over that. It would be less stressful than the current system, where going the limit holds up traffic and going too much over it gets you pulled over so you have to stay in a fuzzy range that varies based on the time of day, how late in the month it is, weather conditions, your vehicle, and the stickers on your vehicle. In short, fuck the police.

I'm not so sure. There are one or two roads I know that have the speed limit set in such a way that speeding is incredibly rare: I've never felt the need to go over that limit, and judging by the flow of traffic, others agree. I don't think these [sections of] roads are unusual in any way except for the oddly-high speed limits. If >>406's proposal were implemented, perhaps more roads would be like these.

In my experience, the most popular gifts are the funny ones, like giant fuzzy paw-slippers or fuzzy handcuffs. People actually tend to quietly look down on somebody who brings a really expensive gift to a white elephant since it's supposed to just be a fun thing and nobody likes a show-off. I agree there should be a maximum, not a minimum though.

Has anyone watched the documentary "We don't care about music anyway?" It's about obscure japanoise and stuff. Anyway, the other day I found out that one of the bands featured, Umi no yeah!!, took their name from an h-manga with the same name. I thought it was a coincidence at first, the name sounds generic enough, but the front woman always performs in a bikini (just like the female lead in the h-manga) together with two other guys which call themselves her "aids" or some shit (in the h-manga, there are two aids that end up coercing the female lead into having sex with them, threatening to quit as they aren't getting paid).
This isn't stated anywhere, and after the documentary the band kind of slipped off the radar so there's isn't much info about them online, I thought it was interesting at any rate.

Even in that there's flirty banter between Romeo and Juliet when they kiss:

ROMEO
[To JULIET] If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

JULIET
Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this;
For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.

ROMEO
Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?

JULIET
Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.

ROMEO
O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do;
They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.

JULIET
Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake.

ROMEO
Then move not, while my prayer's effect I take.
Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.

JULIET
Then have my lips the sin that they have took.

ROMEO
Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged!
Give me my sin again.

JULIET
You kiss by the book.

Have a holly jolly Christmas. It's the Christmas time of year. Oh how holly, it's a holly jolly Christmas this year!!
Dashing through the snow in a one horsed open sleigh. Through the hills we go. Laughing all the way. Hahaha.
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, and the very next day, you gave it away. This Christmas, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special.
Jingle bells Jingle bells. Over the hills we go.
Rudolph the red nose reindeer, reindeer. Had a very shiny nose, like a light bulb. When all the others saw him. They would laugh and call him names.
Santa Clause is coming to town. Santa Clause is coming to town. Yeah!
Baby it's cold outside.

Don't be afraid to join in if you know the tune.

Why do I like camouflage so much? I guess because I'm drawn to it as an art-form despite it never getting the recognition as such. Each different pattern is an abstract interpretation of a specific environment. The same forest, desert, or war-torn city may have several different interpretations.

Holy shit, job hunting is awful. It's just the absolute worst thing ever. You can spend weeks working your absolute best on applications and interviews and have literally nothing to show for it - literally nothing, not even an "oh well, I guess I learned something" just a hollow nothingness.

739 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8166 00:21

>>738
I've been there, and I fully agree. I job hunted for 3 months once, and was completely dispirited by the end. The longer I hunted, the less effort I felt like putting into the applications and interviews, too. I ended up taking a job with a horrible commute and low pay out of desperation.

Plus, all the good jobs I've seen my friends get have just been through knowing people, not through interviews or applications. Which kind of sucks for somebody who is not good at the whole "networking" thing.

I applied for a job last year where I met every one of the qualifications, had the specialized skills, and passed their knowledge test like it was nothing. They were acting super excited to get me on board asap...until they found out I was a student and I'd only be around for the summer, and suddenly the thing they wanted most was for me to get out of the office and stop wasting their time. It was as cold as if they'd found out I was a meth dealer or something.

I brought it up when they brought up scheduling. They said nothing about it being a long term position before then. It was for skilled labor, but I already had the skills and a ton of experience so I would've needed minimal training. It didn't pay nearly well enough that I could imagine anyone wanting to make a career out of it, so it was odd to me that it would be so critical that I be a long-term employee.

I thought this once. Conclusion: Do it on the side instead, and see what happens. Become a freelancer or part-timer so you have more free time.
Otherwise:
Failed game => a year+ of no-income downtime and not much to show for it.
Successful game => a year+ of no-income downtime for something that might just let you break even.

You'll need to make a bunch of games. For your first few, think of them as learning experiences. If they sell well, great! Otherwise, getting the experience of making, finishing, selling and advertising will eventually get you to living off your work.

Get to 10+ games, and if you have any talent & skill for it, one or two might be hits.

It ain't easy, and there's a lot of competition out there.

And a bit of advice...I've been in the "working a full-time job so I don't have time or energy to work on other projects" situation before. The thing is, you have to really want it. You have to just desire it really badly. Once you want it badly enough, you'll magically have the energy to stay up to 3am working on it even though you have to get up for work in three hours. And then you'll go through periods of not wanting it as much, and if you just can't manage to get your burning desire back, maybe it's just not for you. But if you can manage to fight through those times, it will be worth it.

So go live your dreams, >>768! I believe in you!

We have to crunch this stupid thing now in record time. It seems right down impossible to meet the deadline, which is next Friday. We started this project last Wednesday. Heh.

I think my boss may have fucked up and promised the owner he'd fix whatever he fucked up by this week. Of course, the people who actually fix the retarded mistakes an executive manager commits are always the low-level employees who have no choice.

But I'm thinking we probably won't finish anyway. He'll have to face the facts next Friday. If he goes down, I think he'll try to take me (and me particularly) with him though.

I studied Japanese for a while because... well, you know why. Anyhow, I never formally practiced my listening skills, so while my reading is below average, my listening is just pitiful. Recently, however, I realized that for certain anime characters, I for some reason can understand them some what clearly without any difficulty. Even if it's words that I don't understand, I'm still able to comprehend the syllables that composes the word. Investigating a little further showed that these characters consisted only of high voiced anime girls.

I read or heard somewhere that even just listening to a language builds the neural pathways in your brain to better comprehend the language although it doesn't help your grammar or vocabulary if you haven't studied any. If this study is real and not something I misremembered or am currently lying about, I think a good guess as to why I can only understand this selection of Japanese speakers is because of my viewing habits. That being tons of SOL/yuri/CGDCT shows without any male characters.

I imagine an attractive woman starring in a shampoo commercial. The director wants her to have a more orgasmic face, so they get somebody to stimulate her breasts from behind. I don't know much about politics, but I believe there are plenty of countries that have socialist programs, including the US. Weren't the socialist programs that led to "famine, fascism, mass murder, and large-scale wars" implemented in a way that distributed the wealth completely equally? Isn't Sanders implementing a program that only distributes it in a more even fashion (like the top tenth of the 1% don't get all the money)? From what it sounds like, he could still sell it as capitalism in that the harder you work, smarter you are, and luckier you are, the more money you have. It's just that if you accumulate so much wealth that you're business literally can't fail or you can easily corrupt the political system with your money, you will have to pay hefty taxes to lower you down to a more reasonable wealth, which is still unimaginable rich for most of us. I genuinely don't know if this is correct, but that's what I got out of this whole ordeal.

If you look at capitalist United States, it's become a fascist system in that you have 10% of the nation controlling the entire country, and the bottom 90% not having any say in the government (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tu32CCA_Ig). We also have had plenty of wars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_United_States#21st_century_wars) which from what I hear, some of those were started to get oil. I'm not sure if those are considered large-scale or not. And we have ever increasing famine as poor cities can't get clean water like Flint, Michigan or other cities as well (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jan/28/philadelphia-water-testing-crisis-flint-health-risk http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/michigan/flint-water-crisis/2016/01/27/many-michigan-cities-higher-lead-levels-flint/79438144/). I don't know about mass murder (unless you want to count all those terrorists we killed), but we do have mass incarceration, and a lot of those who are incarcerated are nonviolent drug offenders (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/us-prison-population_us_56686cf0e4b0f290e5217ffb). I'm not saying all of this is due to capitalism, but it doesn't seem like socialism is causing it either.

The problem with Sanders is that he's more of a welfare capitalist than an actual socialist.
The biggest problem in US politics, though, is the lack of dubstep denpa recommendations and I've yet to see a politician that sheds a light on the problem of dubstep denpa, j-core, gabber, gabberstep, gabberstep denpa and lolicore shortage among the masses.

Have you ever considered a career in political journalism?

984 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8188 16:28

My fragile psyche is not equipped to deal with this.

985 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8188 21:16

I am deathly afraid that I'm losing my own identity. The things I loved and cared about so deeply, even only a year or two ago, already I'm indifferent to, and I regularly change my mind about things I've believed as long as I can remember. Any way I change, in isolation, is perfectly reasonable and unremarkable, but taken altogether it's as though I'm actively trying not to be myself any more. I feel like some day I'll wake up, look in the mirror, and see a total stranger looking back at me. It's not even a question of what I've gained or lost - I accept that most of the changes were for the best - it's the principle of it, that I'm not existing consistently enough.

When I said I'm afraid of losing my own identity, perhaps that's not strictly true. If I were in an accident and had complete retrograde amnesia, for instance, that would be perfect; every part of me would be perfectly encapsulated, unchangeable forever, in the form of Me Before The Accident. I'd have a blank slate, and it wouldn't matter if I were different from before, or if I changed afterwards - it's to be expected, coming to terms with something so traumatic. But the gradual, continuous change of everyday life is somehow abhorrent. It's like a degenerative illness.

I wish I was just afraid of concrete things like heights or spiders rather than this stupid existentialist bullshit.

Yes, very much so, Canadian French is nearly unrecognizable and very few French French speakers can understand what the person is saying, where a French French speaker will just sound stuck up and overly proper to a Canadian French person.

Mycoprotein is the fucking best, I mean god damn. This whole time I was passing it off as some lame meat substitute, when in fact it's way better than meat. No fat, no gristle, no sinew; just that nice solid meatiness all the way through. I'm going to be eating a lot more mycoprotein in the future.

Mushrooms are sleazy, rubbery and gross. I don't know how manufacturers treat them to make "mycoprotein", but it can't be healthy. Sounds like a scheme to cash in on those sorry losers who kinda go veggie due to some weak reasoning followed by "that's my choice, okay?" but who can't really give up meat.

Oh, you eagerly waited someone to say "I don't know" about anything — just to post that bit about search engines. Did you fall into this trap yourself recently?

As for mycoprotein production, I'm not really interested in establishing one myself nor I think knowing how something's made makes inherent dangers clear. So, googling, binging, duckduckgoing or using any other web search tool wouldn't help me much. What is needed is a clear scientific study which you fail to mention in your response.
