It feels like my youtube recommendations have gotten worse. Streams with less than 100 viewers, "dank meme" compilations along with family guy funny moments, those text to speech Reddit reading videos with "entitled parents", etc.

The Youtube recommendation algorithm has been terrible for a while now. I miss the days (maybe 5+ years ago?) when you would get a wide variety of recommendations, even ones that were only tangentially related to the video. You could reach the "dark side of youtube" pretty easily just by scrolling down the recommendations to find the strangest one, clicking that, and repeating. Even if most of the videos were shit at least they were surprising, and you could sometimes stumble on gold. Now you just get recommended the same shit to death all the time with basically no variety. Plus many of the recommendations are just from channels you're already subscribed to.

As a test I created a new account and spent a long time liking and favoriting as many interesting, weird, and obscure videos as I could. It didn't help at all. The only good recommendations were videos from the same channels I had already liked. The best way I've been able to find "dark side of youtube" videos is by creative use of the youtube search function, or combing subreddits like r/DeepIntoYouTube (although reddit's taste in "weird" is often not the same as mine).
