Today I arrived home, after being gone for quite a while, to find a dead moth hanging onto the wall outside my room. Suitably surprised, I carefully placed it on my desk, to admire and decide what to do with later. A few minutes later, I was shocked to find that not only was it not dead, it was actually a brightly coloured butterfly (a small tortoiseshell), not a moth. It only looked that way because the undersides of the wings were greyish brown. I managed to catch it under a glass (it was still quite sluggish, having only just woken up) and looked up what to do with overwintering butterflies. Apparently I should let it hibernate outdoors, which I'll sort out tomorrow.

Really though, what are the odds of this happening not only to a lepidopterist, but to someone whose waifu has a strong association with butterflies and returning from the dead?

Last night, I dreamt the milk crate I picked up out of a restauran and carried for 5 miles developed a crack before I could attach it to my bike.

I woke up, and checked it as a matter of priority. It's fine. But I can't believe I'm getting so worked up about a milk crate. Only another day of carrying it around before I can attach it to my bike. I bought two surplus carriers to use as bike panniers if the crate is too big. I know it's going to crack someday.

I was even nervous about bringing the stolen crate around town, so I put some things in it.

Day two of the butterfly fiasco.

I took my little Lazarus outside and gently encouraged it to flutter off and find somewhere outdoors to hibernate. Alas, it just crawled forwards a few centimetres, then closed its wings and went back to sleep. It really is far too cold for it, and I don't think I can find any sensible places to put it. For now I've let it free in my room, and it's crawled up my windowsill and sat there not doing very much.

I'm really not sure what to do with the poor thing. On the one hand, the population of this species is in rapid decline, and I do want to let it free in the wild - but on the other hand, I'm fairly confident that in its current state it wouldn't survive the winter. What should I do, DQN?

Here's the third update of the butterfly saga (because I'm sure you were all so worried).

The butterfly is still alive and active, however it seems to be having great difficulty flying; it just twitches its wings a little every so often, as though it's trying to fly but its muscles are too weak, or something. I suppose it has (presumably) just come out of hibernation, to be fair.

I have come to the conclusion that I really can't come up with any sensible place to leave it to hibernate. Ideally, if it becomes strong and active enough to fly, then I'll let it go and it can find its own place, which will be much better than anywhere I could find for it. Otherwise, I'll just let it stay on my windowsill until it dies, and keep its corpse as a memento.
