444 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-7961 12:56

>>443
Kind of agree. To me part of the problem is that it's mostly actually anti-science fiction (see the "caveman science fiction" comic for a send-up of this) and another part is that the explanations given for stuff are often clearly bullshit to anyone who's studied the science involved more than the average Joe. "It's magic" starts to seem not so bad by comparison (though fantasy has its own problems regarding the constant use of Tolkien-chewed-up-by-D&D-and-regurgitated tropes and the glorification of monarchy/feudalism.)

Actually there's no way to trade from gen2 to gen3, so gen1-2 is like a closed ecosystem. You can with all the needed equipment go all the way from gen3 to the latest games.

I have just bought a plastic axe. But that's not the spooky part.
The axe was so I can go as Jack Nicholson to a birthday party. But that's not the spooky part.
As my gift to the embirthened at said party, I have bought the Lord of the Rings box set. But that's not the spooky part.

You see, the Garfield arc of the CTRL+V thread reminded me about mezzacotta.net, so I went there. The news section has lain dormant for years... until yesterday. I clicked on one of the links.

I had a very vivid dream of being back in my secondary school. I haven't been there, or even particularly thought about the place, in years now, so it came as something of a surprise. The place was heavily embellished, as is normal for dreams - I don't recall my school containing a supermarket, construction site or hotel rooms, for instance - but the general layout was quite accurate. The library, maths block, languages block, paths through the grounds and so on were all in the right places.

So what was so vivid about it? I'm not sure how to put it exactly, but it was the feeling, or the general atmosphere of the place. The high ceilings, creaking floorboards, corridors just a little too narrow, lockers haphazardly arranged wherever they fit, and other such insignificant details. I remember mostly just walking about the place feeling strange at being back after so long. I also remember being unable to find a particular classroom, but it didn't feel particularly urgent; it wasn't like I was late for a lesson or something. It was actually oddly calming.

Really though, I don't know why I'm getting so sentimental about all this. Secondary school was certainly not a fun time in my life; I spent most of the time struggling with depression and social alienation. I almost feel like having such a rosy image of the place now is somehow an injustice to my former self.

Actually, more than anything, the whole situation reminds me of Rule of Rose (but perhaps with fewer projectile vomiting mermaids).

Found another hibernating butterfly in my house. Hibernating until the end of time, that is. By which I mean it's dead. It is deceased, pining for the fjords, passed on, no more, ceased to be, expired and gone to meet its maker, a stiff, bereft of life, resting in peace, pushing up the daisies; its metabolic processes are history; it's off the twig, kicked the bucket, shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. It is an ex-butterfly!

It's yet another small tortoiseshell. Just now it's happily resting on my desk, wings closed, legs curled up, doing its very best dead leaf impression. I forgot just how light butterflies are - even lighter than paper. Holding it, you literally can't feel its weight at all.

Perhaps if I'd found it sooner...
