why the fuck do i always like the anime's Worst Girl
like not the obviously bad or tsundere one but the one that gets memed on and liking clearly means i'm basic af
>>651-652
You're missing the point. I didn't say vocabulary is bad in general, it's just that some people try to use words they don't really understand, so it seems awkward and forced, and you can tell that they're doing it to sound smarter than they really are. If you actually know a word, then by all means use it.
You can tell when someone is using a word they don't really understand though.
Drifting away.
>>651 yeah same i do this too but because i'm a fucking autist sperglord, not because i'm consciously trying to sound pretentious
Complicated language is often about the writer. It's self-centered. YOU want people to know that YOU are smart. YOU want to express yourself in a way that makes the most sense to YOU, even if it makes less sense to your audience. YOU want to show off what you learned over the years, even if no one else cares.
Simple language is about prioritizing the listener over the speaker. Try to make the message as easy for them as possible. The point of communication should be ensuring that the audience understands.
It's not condescending, it's about efficiency. People might be able to understand a 5,000 word essay from a very articulate person who likes to show off their personal lexicon, but a 500 word essay with easier-to-digest words is preferable because you get the same message across with less time and effort for the reader.
>>658
Unless there's actual information in the 4,500 words you're throwing away. There often is.
>>659
But you can condense that same info into fewer words. Most of the time, anyway. Old school media like TV and books used to try and make things as long as possible, because they didn't have much content, and wanted to drag it out as they could in order to meet some minimum page or time length, such as 300 pages, or 30 minutes for an episode.
Now? Things are different. There's so much media that nobody has time for that shit. Too many posts on social media timelines to read everything. Instead of having a small amount of content and trying to make it as long as possible, you have a lot of content and need to try and make it as brief as possible.

came across a youtube channel about traditional life from a family of people who are claiming to live more traditional lives
they have enough views to make money from youtube, and they also have an amazon affiliate thing and an etsy store and an ebook and a pinterest page
do they not see the irony
Gantz vs Antz
>>662
There's no irony. All those things you mention are superficially modern. Etsy us just another face of the idea of a marketplace which has been around for millenia. They're (I'm assuming) using their time and effort to produce crafts and artisanal goods. The only thing is the marketplace they sell it at isn't a physical one. This is partially out of necessity and partially out of convenience. All of the things you listed that are supposed to run counter to living a "traditional life" are updated formats of preexisting things. Saying "they use the internet so that invalidates the fact that they are living traditional lives" while they are in effect artisans living off their product and physical work is absurd. More importantly how is their family structure? What is their outlook on life? What values do they put emphasis on? These are much more important things to look at than when evaluating them than "well they have a Pinterest account" and other things that are essentially modern wallpaper on age old concepts.
oh god, stewart himself saying the new trek is going to be "much needed in these dark times" and it's about "the next chapter in Picard's life"
it's going to be geriatric picard sitting around in a retirement home IN SPAAAAAACE trimming a bonsai tree and listening to mozart, PS refugees welcome. calling it now it's gonna suck so fucking bad
>>658 There's more to language than communication and efficiency! I'm reminded of that Fry & Laurie Tricky Linguistics video again. I appreciate when a writer has faith that I have read a book before and doesn't need to spoonfeed me, but we agree it's obvious and annoying when a fancy word is forced and misused. But, I don't believe it's always as forced as you imply, I don't think that's why people become writers. Wait, after I typed that I realised maybe you weren't talking about books, when you say "writer" are you talking about online journalists? Cos that's different, those guys are nincompoops
> online journalists? Cos that's different, those guys are nincompoops
oh god, don't tell me you're one of those "gamergate" types
>>667 Absolutely not, all that shit passed my by, but it's a lot more often I read an article or review and think, that was a completely worthless misinformed opinion I regret wasting time on, I wonder what made them decide to pursue this line of work
>I wonder what made them decide to pursue this line of work
probably wanted to have a voice or to make a change in the world
but in reality, a lot of articles are just "10 avocados to shove up your ass"
then again, people who study other professions end up in the same dilemma: delusions of grandeur met with mundane and disappointing reality (like code monkeys thinking they'll be the next bill gates)
I wonder how much rap is just larping. For every rapper who mentions gangs and guns and shit, how many of them are real vs. just playing pretend because it sounds cool?

Black people are all criminals
I keep going to look up some english set phrase in japanese and finding out that there's no concise translation or similar-meaning idiom(but there often is one in chinese, weirdly enough) and the best way to describe that thing is by just literally describing it
examples I've had recently:
"benefit of the doubt" - best translation is basically the definition = (証拠ないから)有利に解釈 = judge(someone) favorably (because there is no evidence)
"middle of nowhere" - best translation = 人里離れた which also just means "far away from human habitation"

it hasn't been that bad actually
>>673
I suppose a lot of times that is more like trying to translate cliche for cliche than really getting at the thought behind what was said. The entire thing can become contentious to say the least.
For instance, "middle of nowhere" can be meant with contempt for rural areas and this might be better expressed as ど田舎 despite referring to actual habitation.

If your significant other treats you like shit, it's accepted that you'd break up with them. If your friends treat you like shit, you stop being friends, or at least don't hang out as often.
So why is it that if your family treats you like shit, it's not socially acceptable to cut them off?

Reach out and get help when you need it. Counselor, friend, family, boss, church, whatever. When you are in a tough spot, other people can help, but they can't read your mind. You gotta tell them.
Or did I misinterpret your post?

I appreciate the concern, but I was just commenting on the component parts of an animal. Independent in form and function, yet utterly interdependent at the same time; multiple systems with mutually beneficial functionality. Fascinating.

It gets better. Just contemplate the fact that the 80 billions or so of neurons making up your brain somehow cooperate to create the impression of a (most of the time) coherent mind. Of course, not all of them by far are involved in consciousness, but it's still impressive.

fuck off jimbo that's more like the price of my coffee for like three weeks, not everyone goes to starbucks every day
As someone who doesn't drink coffee, that's $3 more than the price of my coffee this Wednesday.

Oh, then does being self-employed change what you can do with income tax?

I've always been amused and slightly annoyed at the ubiquity of the 'cup of coffee' analogy. I don't drink coffee either, and even if I did I wouldn't spend $3 on it every day, I would make it myself.
You see "buy me a coffee" buttons all over the place, like https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ or https://ko-fi.com/ which claims: "The 'coffee' metaphor is a more human way to receive support." But why?
In real life, when a friend does you a favor, it's taboo to compensate them with money. People say, "don't worry about paying me back, just buy me a drink sometime." The problem seems to be that as soon as money changes hands, it complicates your relationship by mixing the worlds of friendship and business.
This is fine for small favors, but western society takes the concept that cash is crass to the point of absurdity. Friends refuse cash compensation even for huge favors that cost them money. People give each other gift cards, even though cash is so much more practical. At weddings, cash gifts are frowned upon, whereas in Asian countries they are expected to help pay for the expensive ceremony, which is much more practical. It's considered rude to even talk about money, even though doing so could actually be quite beneficial.
It's especially absurd to carry over this concept that cash is crass when begging strangers for money on the internet. "Buy me a coffee", "buy me a beer"...no matter how you phrase it, you're fundamentally still just begging for money. It just strikes me as a sad attempt to pretend that you're everybody's friend.
It must work though, because everybody's doing it.
>>736
beggars can't be choosers
the best way to get handouts is to only ask for small amounts
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadweight_loss
if you ask people for $50, they won't give you anything
if you ask for $10, fewer people will give
if you ask for $3, people will be more likely to donate
more people at $3 = more money overall even though it's less money per person

I fondly remember when my ex-girlfriend was on her period, but I was thirsty as fuck so I pinned her against the wall and aggressively face fucked her until I came in her mouth. As I came, she grabbed my ass and pushed my cock in as far as it could go, greedily sucking every last drop.
Afterwards, I felt bad about being rough and apologized, but she breathed in an extremely horny voice, "no... that was... extremely hot." Hearing that was one of the best moments of my life. There's something incredibly validating about a girl enjoying when you cum in her mouth and telling you so.
>tfw no gf
It seems like the girl always recovers within a week while the guy stays hurting for a while. I think it's because of the difference in availability, if I had a buffet of pussy coming to call the second my breakup was through I'd be much less sad too I suppose.
I can't mope around forever. How do I get out of this rut?

are there more dudes than girls or some shit? I don't get it
I've been thinking about it and I don't want to work in an office when I'm fucking 60. If current conditions keep up and I'm unable to retire like every other millenial, I'm killing myself at 55 or some shit. Easy peasy.
>>743
maybe some sort of catastrophic event or war will kill us, thus eliminating the need to commit suicide
I'm gonna die alone
>>740
I've noticed this too. At first the girl is extremely emotional and heartbroken, and feels like her world is ending. But a few weeks later, she'll have recovered and the guy still can't get over her, sometimes for years to come.
Of course this is just based on anecdotal evidence, and as with all generalizations there are plenty of counter-examples.
Theoretically the best way to get out of the rut is to dedicate yourself to self-improvement, such as exercise and pursuit of hobbies. This has the added benefit of making yourself more attractive, too. Unfortunately that's much easier said than done.
