The Youtube recommendation algorithm has been terrible for a while now. I miss the days (maybe 5+ years ago?) when you would get a wide variety of recommendations, even ones that were only tangentially related to the video. The only good recommendations were videos from the same channels I had already liked. The best way I've been able to find "dark side of youtube" videos is by creative use of the youtube search function, or combing subreddits like r/DeepIntoYouTube (although reddit's taste in "weird" is often not the same as mine).
