I always seen 4-ch as a loving tryhard western imitation of 2channel with its own brand of news4vip forum games, shitposting, kopipe, etc (DQN) as well as some legitimate discussion (the other boards), but most people who came to this site seemed to come from 4chan or iichan and so the posts have always had a thin veneer of western "chan culture". And that was fine. The end product was something intimately familiar yet always somewhat fresh - something I could leave for a year and come back to without feeling totally lost. I'd always find posters happy to indulge in discussion of needler hall or clonepa hijinks, but there'd be some new trends or discussions too.
However nowadays in tyool 1993 it feels like most of the active users are actively engaged in perpetuating this previously-minor "chan culture" and it feels a bit like what made 4-ch special is being whittled away. Like it's being reduced to just another imageboard-adjacent site. What do you guys think? Am I just viewing the past through rose-tinted specs? Maybe I missed the point and western imageboard culture is actually a lot more central to 4-ch than I thought? Maybe it's the same as it ever was?

The decadent decline of text boards is an age old story, but I’m more interested in what people think 4-ch is “about”. Apologies for the spam, friends.

I disagree. Most of the people doing it here seem to be doing it in a lighthearted, somewhat mocking manner (perhaps even the dreaded ironically) or even malicious like that dude who kept saying we shat our diapers until his shtick became a running joke after the zoomer guy lost his shit in the /req/ thread and now people imitate both of them, new trends still come but they might be more similar to imageboard and social media stuff because of the overall state of the internet which is a different conversation. I guess you could say they're partaking in "chan culture" but it's done in a different way than most. The ever-changing culture of 4-ch also has to do with the lack of a catalog, meaning threads come and go.

I've kinda lost interest in 2ch the past few years, and from my limited perspective it seems like its glory days are long since gone. Maybe this will change once I start learning Japanese.
For me, "textboards" in general and this place in particular, is/was defined rather by its contrast to chan culture: a slower pace, long collaborative threads and more mature discussions (ostensibly by the exact same people as on less pleasant sites).

But maybe that's just me!

I always thought studying Sanskrit was dumb unless you're like a hardcore Buddhist or Hindu adherent (or scholar who wants to be associated with the prestige of the language). It's less effort to learn Hindi and you get one of the most spoken languages in the world.
