Not everybody lived off the land back in the olden days. Raising crops and livestock was still a farmer's job, it wasn't like everyone had these skills.

come to think of it the late 1800s/early 1900s were probably some of the worst times possible to be born as an "average person"

if you somehow made it through the great war, the spanish flu, the red terror/stalinist purges, the depression, world war 2, the holocaust, the resulting famines and ethnic cleansings across europe, then you'd have died of old age right around the time of the vietnam war and the cuban missile crisis and such, going to the grave thinking that one way or another the world was doomed to perish in nuclear fire. if you lived especially long you might have had some momentary hope with the collapse of the ussr and the supposed "end of history" and then had a final shock upon your soul inflicted by the fresh horror of the yugoslav wars.

i've seen jpod cited as the point where douglas coupland really just stopped trying and decided to cash in, but it was my entry point to his books... some points to consider
i) i was a high-schooler when i read it
ii) i probably picked it cause my local library had it
iii) i didn't know about microserfs at the time
iv) i remember the atheist character turning christian being a real wall-banger moment for high-school me and it still seems really dumb in hindsight
v) coupland's probably going down in hell as an end-of-history booster (i remember reading something he wrote about how cool it was that east germans had mcdonalds now in the early 90s) and it's definitely pretty dumb to write a book claiming to speak for a whole generation (but gen x wasn't a bad book and basically everything in it is still being said by millennial hipsters today. "brazilification" in particular)
vi) i'm still processing couplandism >10 years after first being exposed so i guess it's quality art if it makes me think this much. or i'm just dumb
viii) jpod has a guy who's addicted to robo in it LOL

I sometimes have deep anxiety over burning in hell or similar fates after death, so I have been praying to everything or pleading with whatevers out there if anything is out there.
I don't want to come back as some awful deep sea creature either, if reincarnation is real, I should do some good deeds and charity work while I'm at it.

187 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-9949 00:02

How do you know it wasn't just one person?

188 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-9949 00:41

I grew up in a religious cult; once I worked free of that I found myself 120% done with the idea of the supernatural in its entirety. Nothing/nobody's listening except yourself, you won't come back as something else, there is no fate after death except infinite nothing you'll never perceive, and I'm at the point where I'm pretty comfortable with that. I would argue that you should do some good deeds and charity work, but not out of a sense of fear or guilt. Just do what you can to make things a bit nicer in the world today and the world will be a bit nicer for it...why wait for an eternal reward?

I mean, I won't deny that prayer has value, the same sort of value that meditation has. Neither will cause things to violate causality, conservation, or any other property of the universe. But they can expose and explore things that are important to you, they can help you find peace and relief, they can help you ask questions and figure things out.

I remember pleading with the universe for a cute girl to squeeze, and then finding a very willing one before long. Did the universe deliberately provide me a cute girl to squeeze? No, the universe didn't deliberately do anything, I just happened to have pretty good timing that time. Basically none of my other prayers, some of which were extremely sincere and passionate, were answered, ever. More generally, if the great whatever wants to hook me up with a cute girl on request but not materially protect other less-fortunate kids from crippling poverty, corruption, disease, rape, and untimely death...I'll take my chances on the callous, indifferent universe instead. If I'm wrong after all and I come back as some awful deep sea creature, so what? Most likely I wouldn't comprehend enough to suffer from such an existence any more than the average human does anyway.

189 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-9949 01:35

>>188 having prayers answered is a very different thing than there being a higher observer. “Supernatural” is an interesting way of describing it, since if there was a Creator then it would be the most “natural” thing there is!

I was thinking about it watching that video of the dying ciliate in the other thread, how someone watching me through a 200x lens would see the same thing: me milling around bumping into things and spraying fluids everywhere

I'm slowly making my way through them. I've been reading a little periodically throughout the day. I started on #24.5 for some reason, so I've read mostly the later-middle ones. 24 had a good conversation on the different eras of DQN. I guess it's like social anxiety or depression (?), where it's better to deal with the symptoms through therapy or training vs. risking side effects...
Actually, if there was a pill I could take to instantly become less of a weirdo without any negatives, that would be pretty interesting. But there's probably a reason it doesn't exist.

195 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-9949 13:44

>>193
I think maybe the idea is that they're isolated and cut off because people treat it like a disease, and if people accepted socially unacceptable autism stuff (e.g. stimming, not making eye contact) as part of normal human variation, they'd fit in fine and be perfectly happy. Don't know if that's true, though.

196 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-9949 14:59

Honestly, most of the people saying that aren't autistic, they are usually just "neurodivergent allies", or, they are people who think they have autism. So many self diagnosers out there who think they're autistic because they're socially awkward losers who like anime and programming languages when really they're just painfully undersocialized. Real autists aren't just socially uncomfortable people, you can tell there is something off just by looking at them, they have difficulty verbalizing, they don't "stim" by fidgeting with their fingers or some object, they literally shake back and forth and grunt to themselves and don't seem aware that anybody is even watching, so on and so on. It's honestly an injustice that socially awkward losers talk over people with legitimate problems that simply are not comparable to theirs.
