the thing that would freak out people from the past more than anything else is probably google earth. being able to see any place in the world from the air, in 3d, without having to piece it together from maps and photos and descriptions must have been unthinkable for them

>>414 I'm glad it helped you in that way, that was my intention with these longer meditative tracks and that's why I called it Nice Tall Glass Of Shut Up Juice! Hmmm, let me see if I can explain. Usually when people ask about it, I just say I'm just mucking about, but I do put a lot of care and attention to the sounds I use and how I put them together, there are rules/constraints/principles I go by or deliberately avoid. There's a meaning behind each track, weaving a big mad tapestry. It's heartfelt but tongue-in-cheek at the same time I guess. Carefully crafted with my blood and sweat but with Dada irreverence. I'm inspired by lots of things and like to play with flavours from everywhere... I play in more standard bands but this is an outlet for more honest, out-there experimentation. I've had basically the same approach for 12 years - my tracks are either sculpted collages using a selection of related sounds, or live recordings of improvisation using particular hardware setups.

What generally happens is, the sounds accumulate in a folder on my computer; they might be recordings of me noodling by myself or jamming with friends, or offcuts of audio work for my job, or field recordings, or other stuff. So the parts used all have their own significance, they come from a certain moment or phase in my life. I use these base sounds and experiment, manipulate them in different ways, stretch them, play with the pitch, add tonnes of reverb etc.. then blend them together in ways that create tensions and releases and a nice flow, so there's always something happening. These will collect in a folder for a while, until they naturally fall together into a set of tracks that have a similar feeling or theme. Then I'll fill it out a bit by adding relevant samples itching to get used from my big samples folder, and making other tracks more directly related to the chosen theme. Nice Tall Glass Of Shut Up Juice is part of a double album with Screening Process, collecting tracks I made in the few months before the pandemic. Most of Shut Up Juice is recorded live actually, there's only a few touchups and samples I added afterwards.

It's a bit like an abstract sound diary or something. If someone was to download all my albums to get all the accompanying artwork and video, listened carefully to the sounds and samples and connected all the dots, they would maybe get a clearer picture of me than some of my close friends. There's things I've said in the liner notes I've never told anyone. But, I've made about 100 albums, there are over 1000 tracks. It's just a vain fantasy that someone will do that after I'm dead. Each of those tracks takes me right back to where I was when I made it and what was going on in the world...
