Not everybody lived off the land back in the olden days. Raising crops and livestock was still a farmer's job, it wasn't like everyone had these skills.

One strategy I've used with some success has been to write each thing down on a separate post-it, breaking things down to subthings where it makes sense. Then once you have that done, arrange them in order of priority on your wall/board/bezel. Start knocking them out in that exact order and do not deviate. Once you finish one, throw the post-it in the trash (or feed it to your cockroach farm, I dunno) and watch your tasks dwindle.

After much discussion a friend and I have come to the conclusion that the ideal way to watch the X-Files would be to write a python program or similar that would:
1) show you one random episode, without repeating, at intervals of roughly one week
2) occasionally begin playback at anywhere from 5 to 33 minutes into the episode, as if you'd come across it randomly while channel surfing

I feel like this is the most authentic X-Files experience possible. Trying to watch the entire series straight through just leads to getting bogged down with things like "plot arcs" and "after all the shit she's seen why does Scully still not believe"? and quickly becomes exhausting.

I understand drugs, but I don't understand downers like weed and alcohol. Cocaine and caffeine actually make you feel good.

102 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-9945 12:25

Weed gets me buzzing, I rip a bong then get down to business, it's not a downer for me but it affects people in different ways. Cocaine is overrated, I've had better fun for longer and cheaper with other substances.
Also, I guess it's true in some ways for lots of drugs, but to me cocaine seems to cause a lot of misery at every stage of cultivation, harvest, distribution, then with its users. Any time I've had it it's been disappointing, it makes nice people behave like assholes and assholes even bigger assholes. Have you ever hung out with a cocaine addict? Really annoying

Weed isn't really a downer, I used to smoke up then go for a jog or go lift weights. Depends on the strain, the amount you smoke, your frame of mind etc. It's still a pretty boring drug though, if you need drugs to feel artificially relaxed or artificially excited then consider that you probably have a micronutrient deficiency that you'd be better off correcting than smoking weed or doing cocaine. The only worthwhile drugs are psychedelics.

Caffeine at small doses makes me not feel so tired. At larger doses it helps me focus and do somewhat better at some things, but I also tense up and have a headache before long. So then I take ibuprofen to help with that.

I'd like to try weed and/or shrooms, but I work for the man and it's just not worth the trouble.

>>112 I'd guess because the kinds of people who enjoy that movie are also the kinds of people who don't care that much. It's not like GitS where there was some expectation of faithfulness and respect to the source material; you watch a Jack Black movie specifically to see Jack Black goof around.

My slow, crushing mental breakdown proceeds. Things are always rough for me around this time of year. I've talked to a couple of people about it, and remarked that it's not as bad as last year. Which was true at the time I said it, but I'm starting to have my doubts.

Last winter was especially bad for me and I don't wish to repeat it. In certain ways, things are undoubtedly better than they were then, and I've had things under pretty good control since like February. But here it comes again, and I find myself with almost no ability to concentrate on important things. My brain will not do it. And that not only makes it so I can't work very well, it also gets in the way of me enjoying things I should enjoy. Would-be minor stressors stop me in my tracks and send my brain for the quickest, least-satisfying dopamine hit it can find. I want to do something useful, but the absolute best I can do seems to be a 4-hour wiki binge, an embarrassing amount of online window-shopping, some catchup on non-urgent aspects of one of my hobbies, and only the easiest 18% of the work it takes to clean my living space.

come to think of it the late 1800s/early 1900s were probably some of the worst times possible to be born as an "average person"

if you somehow made it through the great war, the spanish flu, the red terror/stalinist purges, the depression, world war 2, the holocaust, the resulting famines and ethnic cleansings across europe, then you'd have died of old age right around the time of the vietnam war and the cuban missile crisis and such, going to the grave thinking that one way or another the world was doomed to perish in nuclear fire. if you lived especially long you might have had some momentary hope with the collapse of the ussr and the supposed "end of history" and then had a final shock upon your soul inflicted by the fresh horror of the yugoslav wars.
