I was thinking 我 might be appropriate for quotes like Queen Victoria's "We are not amused" but that seems to be conventionally translated as the obvious and boring "私たちは面白くない" (or "私、女王におもしろくありません" which seems to miss the point entirely.)

I also found one blog post suggesting 朕.

OK, crossposting the string thing. Strings are double-ended and it's just as easy to prepend as it is to append. Seriously, this is one of the most basic things to have and it's also taking me the longest

415 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9424 22:03

Prepending a string is easy behind an abstraction, and correct algorithms to do so can be devised by a beginner, but it's not necessarily a performant enough operation depending on your requirements and data structures. I gather that the usual method in practice is to use a standard library's strings and not worry about it too much unless it becomes / contains a foreseeable problem, but I won't pretend to be a professional, just someone with a three-digit rank on a coding contest site.

I'd rather not say, because it would be personally identifying, sorry. But you just find one, start from easy problems and work up to harder problems.

Note that the all-stars of this style of coding are shitting out low quality code because they have to get the answers fast; while you can learn very clever things from analyzing their code, it's not a way to write code that's supposed to be used for real (i.e. someone will have to read it someday).

A lot of the easier problems are variants on things you'd find in any algorithms textbook. A lot of the harder problems are actually too hard for me, but they're usually like multiple layers of the obscure problems found in the doorstopper textbooks programmers only claim to have read to look cool but haven't actually.

It has given me cause for worry, because I translate nerd shit from Japanese and the translator for the new release is currently getting ネットリンチ by people who don't know the language for producing (at least on the lines in question) a more faithful translation than ADV's. It's a teapot's worth of a larger wave, admittedly, and the guy is kinda old and established in Japan so psychologically I figure he's probably okay. But I wouldn't be.

Of course, I do love the series and I refuse to let any dark stain tarnish its majesty; yeah okay if we're being real, in some ways it's a meaningless disaster. But it's a beautiful meaningless disaster, and that's something I value in art.

I'm of two minds about it. Some of the complaints are over dumb shit, but I don't understand how the translator got "worthy of my grace" from "好意に値するよ". That's just not what "grace" means in modern English. My guess is he was trying to make Kaworu sound more... angelic at the expense of accuracy.

Rendering セクト as "leftists" is also perhaps technically correct but guaranteed to be misinterpreted by anyone who isn't familiar with the postwar Japanese far left. Kind of like describing Ayn Rand as a "liberal" or something.

476 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9433 04:42

>>475
I 100% disagree with the premise that it isn't what "grace" means in modern English, although I will permit that going word for word, grace translates to 好意 better than the other way around. It wouldn't have been the word I'd pick, but in context it's medium-alright, and I would say all this of ADV's choice to say "regard", too. No one word is a true winner in this case.

In the script, Shinji responds コウイ? in katakana, as if unsure of which definition (or which kanji, even). Of course, it's only sure that he's probably asking for clarification. It's ambiguous even with full context and a full understanding of the possible meanings.

に値する is closer to "worthy of" than "worth", when you look at the highfalutin words it gets used with compared to 価値 or 甲斐; that it's a little on the cringeworthy/churchy side is both accurate and consistent with the preceding lines (and Shinji didn't give a fuck anyway). "My" is a word I would not have, since it exposes his meaning one sentence sooner than he gives it up (ADV did it, too).

I do think the reprise of the statement at the end was a poor choice: Shinji was speaking only simple words while wallowing in his grief. Oh well, such problems are a big part of why I started learning the language.

On セクト... I think you accidentally a word or two. If you meant to s/"leftists"/"sect"/ then yes.

Interesting perspective.

Rather than saying grace doesn't mean what 好意 does in modern English, I should have said I think it refers to that only in Christian contexts, 99% of the time in the set phrase "God's grace." Thus, I still think the use of "grace" is interpreting Kaworu's weird-ass word choices there as an attempt to sound Biblical, which is not evident from the original Japanese. I checked some Japanese bible verses (from whatever translation it is that's freely available online on random Christian websites) and they seem to generally translate "gratia" as 恩 or 惠.

Otherwise, it's calling upon an archaic meaning that won't jump first to anyone's mind. If someone said "you're worthy of my grace" to me devoid of context I'd think they were asking me to watch their smooth dance moves. Admittedly, it's not supposed to be obvious what Kaworu means there and Shinji probably doesn't. I think the decision to make the line ambiguous isn't the awkward part.

"Worthy of my good graces" would have been OK. If I was the translator I might have gone with "worthy of favor" or something, so the meaning isn't unclear to watchers but Shinji's repetition can be interpreted as "why the fuck would you put it that way bro?"

As for the leftists thing, not sure how badly our wires got crossed there but I was referring to this. https://img.fireden.net/a/image/1561/68/1561683326861.jpg (Top is the new Netflix sub.)
The original line was "第2東京市で起きたセクトによるテロ事件から一ヶ月が過ぎた今日、新たなテロ行為に対し再発防止を第一に政府による…"

I don't buy that "grace" in the sense of "goodwill" and "courtesy" as opposed to "elegance" or "divine favor" has fully become the Christianese sense of 恩寵 lately ("had the grace to admit", "grace and diplomacy", "her usual grace"). To humor the idea, though, MJB has 好意 in Genesis 21:23 (NIV: kindness), 26:29 (treated you well), 29:31/33 (loved). I do think it's not a great pick, though.

I am not sure what word I would pick in English; I'd have stewed over it for weeks if it were my job, but only because I know it's long been a topic of discussion in the English NGE fandom (though I have nothing to do with it). I lean towards "care", as it fits both <treating a heart that is fragile like glass with kindness/affection> (handle with care) and <a mild, borderline-euphemistic term for having romantic feelings about someone> (I care for him). But the primary doubt I have is that it's a little too mild in the latter sense. Y'know, despite the next line going straight (ahem) from subtext to text.

On セクト: Just to clarify, the primary meaning of it is "leftist faction", not "religious splinter". According to the script, it's a ニュース番組, and without much other context to go on, it's safe to assume it's talking about radicals and not fanatics. ADV's reasons for dropping the word is probably brevity; it was their tendency. Also, the full line in the script continues not 政府 but 戦自による当事件の掃討作戦概要が公開されました, so ADV's version of it ("and the government has passed new legislation to prevent another") probably was hastily / unavoidably kikitori'd or something.

Sorry for the rapid change of pace, but is anyone aware if the VIPPER going by the name mastro survived their (apparent) battle against lymphoma?
Last known updates on the topic was in 2014 when they collaborated on the VIPPER ZINE. I am returning to these boards after a prolonged absence and trying to uncover information surrounding past events.

Fair enough. None of us is completely immune to trends, no matter our sincerity and integrity. Nor is wishing to participate in trends and test things for oneself inherently evil.
