Looking at photos of the 1921 Russian famine is oddly extremely unpleasant, I mean like obviously looking at death is gonna be unpleasant and I'm stating the obvious but there's something about famines in particular that gets under my skin even for someone who is desensitized to a lot of this stuff. Maybe its the cannibalism that often accompies it that revolts me, or perhaps its the non-violent, yet pitiable and ghoulish state they leave this world in. Or I could simply be disturbed because I'm not used to these type of images. It gives me the same intense despair of "true love is dead" when unexpected affairs happen, which is way less bad but still.
The more I think about it, this could be simply be human instincts I am feeling, naturally disliking pestilence. Regardless, I am a bit happy that I can feel human empathy over death and disaster after years of 24-hour news and excessive shock content consumption
